Chapter 19 - LEARNING TO LIVE ABOVE GROUND

Emiliano returned home four months after his rescue.

There were no cameras.

No balloons.

No crowds.

Mateo refused every television interview offered that day.

His son did not need to become a public miracle.

He needed to become a child again.

Laura left the front door open when Emiliano arrived.

Every interior door remained open too.

They removed rugs from the house.

Mateo installed night-lights in every hallway.

Jimena created signs with crayons.

NO LOCKING DOORS.

SUNLIGHT ONLY.

EMI’S ROOM.

On the first night, Emiliano could not sleep in his bed.

He lay on the living room sofa instead.

Mateo stayed on the floor beside him.

Around three in the morning, Emiliano whispered.

“Daddy?”

“Yes?”

“Did you really look for me every day?”

Mateo sat up.

“Every day.”

“Aunt Rebeca said people eventually stop.”

Mateo swallowed.

“She was wrong.”

“She said you thought I was dead.”

Mateo’s eyes burned.

“I was afraid you might be.”

Emiliano stared at the ceiling.

“I heard her having parties.”

Mateo said nothing.

“I could hear music.”

His voice became smaller.

“Once I heard Uncle Ernesto.”

Mateo’s breath caught.

“He came to the house?”

Emiliano nodded.

“He was angry.”

“What did he say?”

“He told Aunt Rebeca that Sebastián was making problems.”

Mateo realized this could become evidence.

But he did not reach for a recorder.

Tonight, Emiliano was his son.

Not a witness.

Not a case.

Not a survivor the world wanted answers from.

Just his son.

Emiliano turned toward him.

“I hated everyone.”

Mateo nodded.

“I understand.”

“Even you.”

“That’s okay.”

“I thought you weren’t coming.”

Mateo moved closer.

“I should have found you sooner.”

Emiliano’s face tightened.

“But you came.”

“Yes.”

“You broke the floor.”

Mateo smiled faintly.

“I destroyed your aunt’s very expensive floor.”

For the first time, Emiliano laughed.

It was small.

Almost rusty.

But real.

Jimena appeared in the hallway wearing pajamas.

“What’s funny?”

“Daddy broke a rich floor.”

Jimena climbed onto the sofa.

“I found you first.”

Emiliano looked at her.

“You heard me.”

She nodded proudly.

“I told everybody.”

Emiliano reached for her hand.

For several minutes, the two children lay together in silence.

Mateo watched them.

The family had lost almost a year.

They would never recover those exact days.

But they had tomorrow.

And the day after that.

Sometimes survival was not a dramatic victory.

Sometimes it was simply being allowed another morning.

Then Emiliano said something that made Mateo’s heart stop.

“Daddy.”

“Yes?”

“There’s something I never told the police.”

Mateo looked at him.

May you like

Emiliano sat up.

“When I was under the floor, I found something in the wall.”
