Chapter 11 - The Blue Folder.

The courthouse hallway was brighter than Adrian expected.

White stone.

Fluorescent panels.

Too many cameras.

Too many people pretending not to stare.

Malcolm walked beside him with a file under one arm.

Marcus followed at a respectful distance.

Nora had remained with Helena at the penthouse.

Adrian had not asked her to come.

He had started to understand that every person standing near him became part of the story other people wanted to tell.

At four twelve, the hearing began.

Ewen sat across the aisle.

Adrian had imagined this moment for fourteen years without knowing he was imagining it.

He had pictured a grave opening.

A door opening.

A phone call.

Never this.

Never his brother alive twenty feet away and legally asking not to be contacted.

Ewen wore a dark blue suit.

The scar at his temple was lighter in person.

He looked older than forty-one.

Celeste sat beside him.

Victor sat behind them.

Adrian noticed immediately that father and daughter did not speak.

The split from the mansion was real.

The judge entered.

Everyone rose.

The hearing moved quickly.

Ewen’s attorney argued that Adrian controlled security, company resources, and family property.

He claimed Ewen feared being pressured into surrendering his revived trust interest.

Malcolm responded that Adrian had only learned Ewen was alive fourteen hours earlier.

He produced the original photograph, the hospital notes, and the old letters.

The judge examined the dates.

“Mr. Ewen Vale signed his petition six weeks ago.”

“Yes, Your Honor.”

“Mr. Adrian Vale did not know he was alive?”

“That is correct.”

The judge looked toward Ewen’s table.

“Then what contact justified the fear described in the petition?”

Ewen’s attorney hesitated.

Celeste whispered something.

Ewen looked at her.

Then he stood.

The judge raised an eyebrow.

“Mr. Vale?”

Ewen spoke.

“I want to answer.”

His attorney tried to stop him.

Ewen ignored her.

“I was told Adrian had been looking for me through private investigators.”

Adrian’s jaw tightened.

The judge looked at Malcolm.

“Was he?”

Malcolm shook his head.

“We found no such instruction.”

Ewen looked across the aisle.

For the first time, his eyes met Adrian’s directly.

The years between them became visible.

“Did you send anyone to Montreal in 2018?”

Adrian answered before Malcolm could object.

“No.”

“Boston in 2021?”

“No.”

“Bridgeport last year?”

“No.”

Ewen’s face changed slightly.

He looked at Celeste.

She remained still.

The judge noticed.

“So someone told you he had?”

Ewen sat down.

“Yes.”

“Who?”

His attorney whispered urgently.

Ewen did not answer.

Adrian watched Celeste.

Her fingers rested on the table.

Perfectly still.

No tapping.

No nervous movement.

Nothing.

The judge denied the broad restraining order.

She granted a narrow order preventing either brother from using company security personnel to approach the other without consent.

It was reasonable.

It also gave Ewen a legal reason not to meet Adrian privately.

As everyone stood, Celeste leaned toward Ewen.

Adrian saw her mouth form two words.

Don’t engage.

Ewen ignored her.

He walked toward Adrian.

His attorney protested.

Ewen stopped five feet away.

Marcus stepped back to comply with the order.

Adrian did not move.

Neither brother spoke for several seconds.

Ewen’s eyes went to Adrian’s chest.

“You still wear Dad’s watch?”

Adrian looked down.

The silver watch had belonged to Dominic.

He had worn it so long he no longer saw it.

Adrian removed it.

He placed it on the courthouse bench.

Ewen looked surprised.

“Better?”

“No.”

Adrian nodded.

“Fair.”

Ewen’s mouth almost moved.

Almost.

Celeste approached.

“Ewen.”

He held up one hand.

She stopped.

Adrian looked at his brother.

“You said marry her first.”

Ewen’s eyes flicked toward Celeste.

Then back.

“I said don’t cancel the wedding.”

“Why?”

“Not here.”

Celeste’s expression sharpened.

Ewen continued.

“You found Northline?”

Adrian did not answer.

Ewen nodded as if silence confirmed it.

“Then you know why Dad moved me.”

“I know part.”

“You always knew part.”

Adrian absorbed the accusation.

“I heard you under the floor.”

Ewen went still.

“I didn’t know it was you.”

“You left.”

“I was told you were dead.”

Ewen laughed softly.

The sound was bitter.

“Everyone was told something.”

Celeste stepped between them.

“That is enough.”

Adrian looked at her.

“Why?”

“Because this is a courthouse hallway, not family therapy.”

Ewen’s gaze stayed on Adrian.

“Ask Mom about the blue folder.”

Adrian frowned.

“What blue folder?”

Celeste grabbed Ewen’s arm.

He pulled free.

“Ewen.”

He looked at her.

“What?”

For the first time, irritation flashed between them.

Celeste lowered her voice.

“That was not part of our agreement.”

Ewen smiled without warmth.

“Neither was you putting Nora Ellis on the floor.”

Adrian went still.

Celeste’s face changed.

Ewen knew.

Adrian moved closer.

“How do you know about Nora?”

Ewen looked at him.

“She sent me a message.”

Adrian stared.

“When?”

“Three weeks ago.”

Celeste closed her eyes briefly.

Adrian felt fresh anger.

“Nora contacted you?”

“Yes.”

“About what?”

“My grandmother.”

Adrian corrected himself.

“Her grandmother.”

Ewen nodded.

“Ruth kept records.”

Celeste stepped away.

She looked furious now.

Not at Adrian.

At Ewen.

“You said she had no idea.”

“She didn’t.”

“You lied to me.”

Ewen’s expression turned cold.

“Now you know what it feels like.”

Victor appeared at the end of the hall.

“Celeste.”

She turned.

Her father’s face was hard.

“We’re leaving.”

“I’m not going with you.”

Victor’s jaw tightened.

“You have already caused enough damage.”

Ewen looked from father to daughter.

Adrian saw the split widen.

Victor left without another word.

Reporters crowded the far end of the corridor.

Celeste looked at Adrian.

“You think this means he trusts you?”

“No.”

“Good.”

She moved closer.

“Because Ewen and I have something you don’t.”

Adrian did not blink.

“What?”

“A shared memory of what your father did.”

She turned and walked away.

Ewen watched her go.

Then he looked at Adrian.

“Blue folder.”

“Where?”

“Mom kept it in the chapel.”

Adrian frowned.

The Vale estate had a small family chapel beyond the garden.

It had been locked since Dominic’s funeral.

“What’s in it?”

Ewen’s expression changed.

“Proof I wasn’t the first son Dominic made disappear.”

Adrian stared.

Ewen stepped backward.

Before Adrian could speak, his attorney reached him.

The hallway filled with movement.

Adrian picked up Dominic’s watch from the bench.

He did not put it back on.

Outside, he called Nora.

She answered immediately.

“Is Helena with you?”

“Yes.”

“Ask her about a blue folder in the chapel.”

Silence.

Then Nora’s voice dropped.

“I don’t have to.”

“Why?”

“Because she heard you.”

Adrian could hear Helena breathing near the phone.

Then his mother spoke.

Her voice was weak.

“Do not open it alone.”

Adrian closed his eyes.

“Why?”

May you like

Helena answered with a sentence that made the courthouse noise vanish.

“Because Ewen was not Dominic’s first hidden child.”
