“Take it,” she said softly, pressing a warm pastry into his hands.

He hesitated. “I… I don’t remember you.”

Her eyes didn’t blink. “You were never supposed to.”

A long silence stretched between them. The street noise faded, as if the world itself leaned closer.

Then she added, almost whispering:

“I baked one every day. For fifty years. In case you ever came back.”

The man’s fingers tightened around the pastry. A faint tremor passed through him.

A buried memory flickered—rain, a train station, a promise he never kept.
