Chapter 1: The Basement of Lies

Chapter 1: The Basement of Lies

For several long seconds...

No one moved.

The silence was so heavy that even the children's quiet breathing sounded deafening.

Nathan's eyes never left Victoria.

He wasn't shouting.

He wasn't asking questions.

He simply stared at the woman he had trusted with everything.

His children.

His home.

His name.

Victoria was the first to speak.

"Nathan..."

Her voice trembled.

"This isn't what it looks like."

Nathan slowly looked toward the three children.

His oldest son, Liam, couldn't have been more than ten.

His thin arms were wrapped tightly around six-year-old Emma while little Noah sat trembling beside them, trying desperately not to cry.

They looked...

Terrified of their own mother.

Nathan's stomach twisted.

He knelt in front of them.

"It's okay."

His voice was softer than any of them had heard in years.

"Dad's here."

Emma hesitated.

Then she threw herself into his arms.

The little girl cried so hard that her tiny body shook uncontrollably.

Nathan wrapped all three children in his embrace.

His expensive suit became soaked with tears.

He didn't care.

Behind him, Victoria tried again.

"I was disciplining them."

Nathan finally stood.

Slowly.

Deliberately.

He picked up the leather riding crop from the floor.

Held it in front of her.

Then quietly asked,

"With this?"

Victoria swallowed.

"They're difficult children."

Nathan looked back at Liam.

"What happened?"

The boy lowered his head.

For a long time...

he said nothing.

Then he whispered,

"Mom says we're only valuable when we're perfect."

Nathan felt something inside him crack.

Liam continued.

"If we make mistakes..."

"...we don't deserve dinner."

Emma wiped her tears.

"Sometimes we stay down here all night."

Nathan's heartbeat thundered in his ears.

He turned toward Victoria.

"How long?"

She remained silent.

"HOW LONG?"

The roar echoed through the concrete walls.

Victoria finally answered.

"...Five years."

Nathan stared at her.

Five years.

Five years while he built hospitals.

Five years while he donated millions to children's charities.

Five years while his own children were living in fear beneath his own house.

His hands trembled.

Not with weakness.

With restraint.

He took out his phone.

"James."

His chief of security answered immediately.

"Sir?"

"Bring the police."

"And every surveillance backup from this house."

May you like

"Now."

Victoria's face turned white.
