Chapter 2: The Secret of the Flute

Chapter 2: The Secret of the Flute
Word spread across the state within days.
Reporters arrived.
Animal experts demanded explanations.
Everyone wanted to know the boy's secret.
Yet he never gave one.
His name was Eli.
And every evening, just before sunset, he sat beside Thunder and played his wooden flute.
The melody was simple.
Gentle.
Almost sad.
Each time he played, Thunder would stand quietly beside him.
Sometimes for hours.
One afternoon, Samuel finally approached the boy.
"How did you do it?"
Eli looked at the stallion.
"My grandfather taught me."
"Taught you what?"
"To listen."
Samuel frowned.
"Listen to a horse?"
Eli nodded.
"My grandfather raised Thunder when he was young."
Samuel froze.
That was impossible.
Thunder's original trainer had disappeared fifteen years ago after a terrible accident.
No one had heard from him since.
Eli slowly removed an old photograph from his pocket.
The picture showed a younger Thunder.
Beside him stood an elderly man.
And a small child.
Samuel recognized the man immediately.
"Daniel Carter..."
The missing trainer.
"My grandfather," Eli whispered.
Samuel's hands trembled.
The mystery suddenly began to make sense.
Thunder hadn't forgotten.
