Chapter 15 - Vanessa’s Last SecretJust when the family began to believe the worst secrets were behind them, Vanessa returned.

She asked to meet Alexander alone.

He refused.

“If it concerns Emily, Sarah stays.”

Vanessa nodded.

They met in the study.

Vanessa carried an envelope.

“I found this when I moved.”

Alexander stared.

“What is it?”

“A letter Emily wrote to me.”

“Why now?”

“Because I didn’t know what to do with it.”

Sarah remained quiet.

Vanessa placed it on the desk.

“It concerns the children.”

Alexander’s face tightened.

He opened it.

Emily had written about her fears.

Not only about her own health.

About Alexander.

About the way he worked.

About how completely he loved and how badly he coped with losing control.

One section stopped him.

If something happens to me, Alex will try to become both parents.

He will fail because no one can be two people.

Please remind him that the children do not need another mother.

They need people who love them in their own way.

Alexander looked at Sarah.

She understood immediately why Vanessa had brought it.

Another paragraph followed.

And if someday someone enters their lives who makes the house feel alive again, do not punish her for not being me.

Alexander closed his eyes.

Sarah looked away.

Vanessa spoke.

“I should have given you this sooner.”

“Yes.”

“I was angry.”

“At me?”

“At everyone.”

Vanessa’s voice cracked.

“Emily was my best friend.”

“Then she died.”

“And you shut me out.”

“I thought you blamed me.”

Alexander stared.

“For what?”

“For knowing.”

“For not telling you earlier.”

“I did blame you.”

Vanessa nodded.

“I know.”

Sarah looked between them.

“But blame didn’t bring her back,” Alexander said.

“No.”

“And shutting you out didn’t help.”

Vanessa’s eyes filled.

“No.”

Alexander sat.

“Why did you really disappear?”

Vanessa looked down.

“Because Henry asked me one day whether his mom was coming home.”

“And I couldn’t answer.”

Sarah’s chest tightened.

“I drove home.”

“I never came back.”

Alexander looked toward the window.

“So everyone left because they were scared.”

Vanessa laughed through tears.

“Basically.”

Sarah smiled sadly.

“That seems to be the family tradition.”

Alexander looked at her.

“You’re enjoying this.”

“Not even a little.”

Vanessa laughed.

The tension finally broke.

That afternoon, Vanessa saw the children.

Henry barely remembered her.

Lucy did not.

Vanessa did not force affection.

She sat on the floor and showed them photographs.

Emily at nineteen.

Emily wearing a ridiculous hat.

Emily asleep in a car.

The children laughed.

Alexander watched from the doorway.

Sarah stood beside him.

“You okay?”

“Yes.”

“Really?”

He nodded.

“I spent two years thinking keeping Emily close meant keeping everything exactly as it was.”

“And now?”

“Now I think keeping her close means letting people tell stories I don’t know.”

Sarah leaned into him.

Vanessa held up another photo.

Alexander groaned.

“No.”

Henry grabbed it.

“What?”

Vanessa smiled.

“Your father had long hair.”

Sarah ran across the room.

“Give me that.”

Alexander tried to stop her.

Too late.

The children screamed with laughter.

Sarah stared at the photograph.

“This is the greatest day of my life.”

Alexander took the picture.

“You’re all banned from this house.”

Lucy laughed.

“You can’t ban us.”

“She’s right,” Sarah said.

“You live here.”

Alexander looked around.

At Vanessa.

At Eleanor.

At Sarah.

At the children.

His house was full.

May you like

Once, that would have terrified him.

Now it felt like proof he had survived.
