Chapter 2 – Every Lie Came With a Receipt

Chapter 2 – Every Lie Came With a Receipt

At 4:15 p.m., my phone buzzed again.

This time, it wasn't Preston.

It was someone I never expected.

Richard.

My father-in-law.

His voice sounded tired.

"I want to apologize."

"For what?"

"For not stopping him."

I closed my eyes.

"You watched."

"I know."

"You said nothing."

"I know."

"I'll regret that until the day I die."

For the first time since breakfast, someone in that family accepted responsibility.

But regret couldn't erase what had happened.

"I appreciate the apology," I said.

"But it changes nothing."

"I understand."

He hung up.

Meanwhile, my attorney uncovered something interesting.

Very interesting.

Preston wasn't nearly as successful as he claimed.

During our engagement, he'd insisted on paying for expensive dinners.

Luxury watches.

Weekend trips.

Designer suits.

I assumed he'd been doing well.

He hadn't.

He'd been using my supplemental credit card.

The one attached to my account.

Over eighty thousand dollars.

Without ever asking.

Every purchase.

Every signature.

Every receipt.

Documented.

My attorney smiled.

"This just became much easier."

Then came the condo.

Only my name appeared on the lease.

Only my income qualified.

Only my bank account paid the rent.

Legally...

Preston had nowhere to stand.

By six o'clock, building management received written instructions.

His access credentials were revoked.

His parking permit canceled.

His name removed from the visitor list.

At 6:42 p.m., he discovered all of it at once.

Security escorted him back outside carrying two suitcases.

Residents watched from the lobby.

Someone whispered,

"Isn't that the groom from yesterday?"

Another person answered,

"I guess the marriage didn't last."

Then Morgan made her biggest mistake.

She posted on social media.

Some women just aren't raised to respect family.

She didn't mention my name.

She didn't have to.

Within an hour, one of the wedding guests replied.

Funny... wasn't your brother arrested for domestic battery tonight?

Morgan deleted the post.

Too late.

Screenshots never disappear.

At exactly 7:13 p.m., Preston was served.

Protective order.

Divorce petition.

Financial demand.

He read the first page.

Then looked at my attorney.

"This is ridiculous."

The attorney simply smiled.

May you like

"No, Mr. Lawson."

"This is documentation."
