CHAPTER 1 — THE WORD THAT BROKE A KING

CHAPTER 1 — THE WORD THAT BROKE A KING
The laundromat felt smaller now.
Not because the room had changed—but because everything inside it had shifted around a single word.
“Mama.”
It still echoed between the humming washing machines like a ghost refusing to leave.
Norah stood frozen, rainwater dripping from her hair onto the little girl’s coat. The child hadn’t let go of her since the moment she spoke. Tiny fingers clenched into Norah’s apron like it was the only solid thing left in the world.
The mafia boss—Dante Bellamy—lowered his gun completely now.
But his men did not move.
No one understood what had just happened.
Dante’s voice came out quieter this time.
“Say that again.”
The girl blinked up at him.
Her lips trembled.
Then she buried her face deeper into Norah’s chest.
“Don’t take Mama away.”
A ripple went through the armed men.
One of them whispered, “Boss… that’s impossible.”
Because Dante Bellamy didn’t have a wife.
He didn’t have a family.
He had blood, power, and silence.
Nothing else.
Norah’s throat tightened. “I swear to you—I don’t know her. She ran to me in the street. I just—just held her—”
But Dante wasn’t listening.
He stepped forward slowly.
One step.
Then another.
Until he was close enough that Norah could see something flicker behind his cold gray eyes.
Recognition.
Not of her.
Of the child.
He crouched down.
For the first time in years, the most feared man in New York lowered himself to eye level with someone.
“What’s your name?” he asked softly.
The girl hesitated.
Then whispered:
“Lia.”
Dante went still.
May you like
The rain outside suddenly felt louder than the gunfire had been.
Because Lia Bellamy had been declared dead one year ago.
