Chapter 2: The Custody Papers

Chapter 2: The Custody Papers
The legal document Ethan had placed on the counter wasn't meant for Amelia.
It was meant for Eleanor.
Inside was a petition requesting an immediate protective order and permanent termination of any future visitation rights involving his wife and unborn child.
Every page had already been prepared before his return.
Because Ethan had suspected something long before today.
His commanding officer had quietly arranged emergency leave after Ethan confessed that something felt terribly wrong.
Small clues had haunted him.
Amelia answering calls in whispers.
Missed doctor appointments.
Suddenly deleted messages.
Each puzzle piece had led him here.
Three days later, Eleanor appeared in court wearing expensive pearls and a carefully rehearsed expression of innocence.
She claimed Amelia was emotionally unstable.
She insisted the bruises came from falls.
Then Detective Bennett presented the surveillance footage.
The courtroom became silent.
Next came testimony from neighbors.
A delivery driver who often heard screaming.
A housekeeper who had quit after witnessing Eleanor slap Amelia.
Even the family physician admitted Amelia had repeatedly arrived with suspicious injuries but refused to identify her abuser.
Finally Amelia stood before the judge.
Her voice trembled.
But every word was clear.
"I wasn't afraid she would kill me."
"I was afraid she'd hurt my baby."
Across the courtroom Ethan never looked away.
The judge signed the emergency protection order immediately.
Eleanor Hayes was denied bail pending trial.
As deputies escorted her away, she turned toward Ethan one last time.
"You'll regret this."

He answered quietly.
"I already regret waiting this long."
