Chapter 2: The Woman Behind the Smile

Chapter 2: The Woman Behind the Smile
Nathaniel said nothing to Vivien.
Not that evening.
Not the next day.
Instead...
He watched.
For seventy-two hours he became the same man who had built Whitmore Logistics from a regional company into a national empire.
He observed patterns.
Tiny ones.
Vivien called her mother every evening.
She checked financial news before breakfast.
She visited Margaret once—but stayed only eight minutes.
She cried whenever nurses entered the room.
She never cried when they left.
Then came the mistake.
Nathaniel's longtime attorney, Harold Benson, requested a private meeting.
"There is something you should know."
Harold placed several documents across the desk.
"They were delivered to my office last week."
Nathaniel stared.
Draft copies.
Marriage agreements.
Updated inheritance clauses.
None had his signature.
One paragraph froze his blood.
Upon marriage, all jointly held marital assets would transfer to the surviving spouse without delay in the event of accidental death.
"Who requested these?"
Harold hesitated.
"Vivien."
Nathaniel looked up slowly.
"I never approved this."
"I know."
"I told her every legal revision requires your signature."
"And?"
"She seemed... disappointed."
Nathaniel felt the room become colder.
That evening he quietly hired a private investigator.
Within four days another truth surfaced.
Vivien Cole had never been engaged before.
She had been married.
Twice.
Both husbands had died unexpectedly.
One from a boating accident.
The second from a fall down a mountain trail.
Both deaths ruled accidental.
Both men significantly wealthier than she had been.
Both estates inherited largely by their surviving spouse.
Nathaniel stared at the photographs spread across his desk.
Different cities.
Different names.
The same smile.
The same blue eyes.
The same perfect expression of grief.
He whispered to himself,
"My God..."
...
He canceled the wedding without explanation.
Vivien remained calm.
Too calm.
"You've been distant."
"I've been busy."
"We can postpone."
"We already have."
Her smile never faded.
Because she believed she still controlled the game.
She didn't know Nathaniel had already changed every lock, every account authorization, every trust document, and every insurance beneficiary.

For the first time...
She had no move left except desperation.
