Chapter 1: The Perfect Performance

Chapter 1: The Perfect Performance
Within minutes, the mansion exploded into chaos.
The blonde woman, Vanessa Crawford, clung to the elderly housekeeper, her mascara streaking down her cheeks.
"I tried to save her!" she cried. "She slipped! She just lost her balance!"
Guests rushed toward the staircase, whispering in disbelief.
"Oh my God..."
"Call an ambulance!"
"Someone help Olivia!"
Yet almost no one actually looked at the woman lying on the hardwood floor.
Olivia Bennett remained motionless, one hand wrapped protectively around her stomach.
Only Detective Daniel Ruiz heard the calm voice still connected through the hidden phone call.
"I'm still conscious," Olivia whispered.
"Everyone is exactly where they should be."
Ruiz answered quietly.
"Officers are already outside."
"Wait for my signal."
Olivia ended the call before anyone noticed.
The ambulance sirens echoed in the distance.
Vanessa immediately began another dramatic breakdown.
"I never touched her!"
"I loved her like a sister!"
The housekeeper nodded sympathetically.
"I saw everything. They were arguing. Then Mrs. Bennett simply fell."
Exactly what Vanessa wanted.
One witness.
One believable story.
One helpless victim.
Or so she thought.
As paramedics carefully lifted Olivia onto a stretcher, one young medic frowned.
"There aren't as many injuries as I'd expect."
Olivia looked directly into his eyes.
Very quietly, she whispered,
"I'm fine."
He blinked.
"What?"
"I need you to keep pretending."
The medic stared at her for two seconds before noticing the detective's badge near the front entrance.
His confusion disappeared.
He nodded.
The performance continued.
Vanessa smiled through fake tears.
Everything was going according to her plan.
She had no idea...
Someone else's plan had started weeks earlier.
Three weeks before the incident...
Olivia had quietly walked into Detective Ruiz's office carrying a small folder.
"I think someone is trying to kill me."
Ruiz expected exaggeration.
Instead...
She placed photographs across his desk.
Cut brake lines.
Tampered medication.
Loose balcony railings.
Security footage mysteriously erased.
Every accident happened after Vanessa had visited the house.
Ruiz leaned back.
"You never reported this."
"I had no proof."
"And now?"
Olivia slid one final envelope across the table.
Inside...
A life insurance policy worth fifteen million dollars.
Recently updated.
With Vanessa secretly added as the sole beneficiary through forged paperwork that investigators were already examining.
Ruiz slowly closed the folder.
"So she's getting desperate."
Olivia nodded.
"If she realizes the forgery is about to be discovered..."
"...she'll make one final move."
Ruiz finished the sentence.
Olivia's answer was chilling.

"And this time..."
"I'm going to let her believe she succeeded."
