Chapter 3: A Place of Her Own

Chapter 3: A Place of Her Own

One year later.

The ballroom sparkled beneath golden lights.

Music floated through the air.

Guests laughed and celebrated.

But this time, Emily was not sitting quietly in the corner.

She stood at the front of the room.

Confident.

Radiant.

Happy.

The event was the grand opening of a nonprofit organization she had created for women escaping abusive relationships.

More than two hundred people attended.

Many of them survivors.

Many of them women who believed they had nowhere to go.

Until they met Emily.

As she stepped to the microphone, the room fell silent.

Linda sat proudly in the front row.

Her eyes filled with tears.

Emily smiled.

"A year ago, I believed silence would keep the peace."

The audience listened carefully.

"But silence never protects victims."

She paused.

"It protects abusers."

Several women nodded.

Some wiped away tears.

Emily looked toward her mother.

"And sometimes, the person who saves your life isn't a hero in a movie."

Her voice softened.

"Sometimes it's simply a mother who stands up and says, 'Enough.'"

The crowd erupted into applause.

Linda covered her mouth, overwhelmed.

After the speech ended, Emily walked off the stage and embraced her mother.

For a long moment neither of them spoke.

They didn't need to.

Because both knew the truth.

The night Brent grabbed her hair, he thought he was teaching her where she belonged.

He was wrong.

That night, Emily finally discovered exactly where she belonged.

Not beneath someone's control.

Not beneath someone's cruelty.

But standing tall.

Free.

Loved.

May you like

And completely unafraid.

The End.
