Two days later, Daniel received a phone call.
The caller ID surprised him.
"Lila Harper."
He answered immediately.
Her voice sounded different.
Shaken.
"Mr. Whitmore... I'm sorry to bother you."
"What happened?"
There was a long pause.
"My mom collapsed at work."
Daniel's heart sank.
Lila explained everything.
Her mother had been diagnosed with a serious heart condition.
Treatment was possible.
The prognosis was good.
But the surgery cost more money than they could ever afford.
For the first time since they met, Lila sounded helpless.
The brilliant girl who could solve equations that baffled professors had encountered a problem she couldn't calculate her way out of.
Daniel didn't hesitate.
"Where are you?"
"At St. Mary's Hospital."
"I'm coming."
Twenty-four hours later, Daniel was sitting beside Lila in the hospital waiting room.
The surgery was scheduled.
The expenses were covered.
The best specialists had been brought in.
Lila stared at him.
"You don't even know us."
Daniel looked through the glass window toward the operating room.
"I know enough."
She lowered her eyes.
"Why are you helping?"
Daniel thought about the question carefully.
Because the truth surprised even him.
For years he had spent his life building companies.
Growing wealth.
Winning deals.
But somewhere along the way, he had forgotten people.
Then a teenage girl in seat 34B had reminded him what mattered.
"You helped my daughter when nobody else could," he said softly.
"You gave me something money couldn't buy."
Lila blinked back tears.
Hours later, the surgeon emerged with a smile.
The operation had been a complete success.
Lila broke down crying.
For the first time since meeting her, Daniel saw the sixteen-year-old not as a genius, but simply as a daughter terrified of losing her mother.
