Chapter 1: The Paper Cranes

Chapter 1: The Paper Cranes

No one moved.

Not Ethan.

Not Lily.

Not even the guests who had been laughing and celebrating only seconds before.

The silence felt heavier than the crystal chandeliers hanging above them.

Ethan took a slow step forward.

Then another.

His eyes never left Lily.

"It can't be you," he whispered.

Lily swallowed hard.

For years she had imagined this moment.

She had imagined Ethan not recognizing her.

She had imagined him forgetting.

She had imagined walking away before he ever knew the truth.

But she had never imagined seeing tears in his eyes.

"You remember the paper cranes," Lily said softly.

Ethan laughed once.

A broken laugh.

"I folded eight hundred and seventy-three of them."

The room remained frozen.

Only Lily understood why he knew the exact number.

Because when she was twelve years old and fighting leukemia, Ethan had promised her they would reach one thousand.

According to an old legend, one thousand paper cranes could grant a wish.

They never finished.

One night Lily was transferred to another hospital.

The next week Ethan was told she had died.

For twenty years he carried the guilt of never completing their final wish.

"I searched for your name," Ethan admitted.

"For years."

Lily lowered her eyes.

"My family changed everything after my treatment. New city. New records. We wanted a fresh start."

Ethan's voice trembled.

"You lived."

A tear slid down Lily's cheek.

"Yes."

The single word shattered something inside him.

Because the little girl he mourned for two decades had been alive all along.

And standing beside him, his fiancée suddenly realized she was watching two people reconnect across twenty years of grief.

Not strangers.

Not old friends.

Something much deeper.

May you like

Something unfinished.

Something fate had refused to erase.
