The substance found in Emma's wine wasn't alcohol-related. It was far worse. A medication that could trigger a life-threatening reaction in people with Emma's condition.

The birthday dinner sparkled with the kind of luxury that made cruelty easy to hide.

White roses climbed the walls of the private dining room. Crystal chandeliers scattered golden light across polished marble. Champagne rested in silver buckets while wealthy guests laughed softly beneath the music of a live string quartet.

At the center of it all sat Emma Reed.

Twenty-one years old.

Pale. Fragile. Fighting to stay upright.

A powder-blue dress draped over her thin frame, and a medical bracelet circled her wrist—a quiet reminder of the condition she had spent years battling.

Her father, Jonathan Reed, had promised her one simple thing.

A peaceful birthday dinner.

Her stepmother, Vivian Reed, had other plans.

To Vivian, every gathering was a stage, and every guest was an audience.

Then, in front of the entire room, she picked up a glass of red wine and shoved it into Emma’s hand.

“Drink it,” Vivian said, her smile sharp enough to cut glass. “Or are you planning to fake being sick all night again?”

The room fell awkwardly silent.

Emma’s fingers tightened around the stem.

Her condition made alcohol dangerous.

Everyone knew it.

Including Vivian.

Yet the woman stood there, smiling, waiting for her stepdaughter to obey.

A stepmother had just forced her chronically ill stepdaughter to drink wine at her own birthday celebration.

Seconds later, a shrill alarm exploded from Emma’s medical bracelet.

And when security pulled up the dining room camera footage, the entire party watched in horror as something appeared to be secretly dropped into Emma’s glass moments before she drank.
