Chapter 2: The Daughter Everyone Buried

Chapter 2: The Daughter Everyone Buried
The DNA results arrived forty-eight hours later.
No one in the Sterling family slept while they waited.
Neither did Maya.
She spent the entire night watching her daughter breathe, wondering whether everything she believed about herself had been a lie.
Colonel Vance returned personally.
He placed a sealed government envelope on the table.
His hands shook.
"I've delivered battle reports with steadier hands than these."
Maya looked at him.
"Please."
He opened the folder.
"The results confirm a 99.999% genetic match with preserved biological samples from General Jonathan Hale and Dr. Eleanor Hale."
Silence.
"You are their daughter."
Maya stared blankly.
Then tears rolled silently down her face.
Not loud.
Not dramatic.
Just years of loneliness dissolving into grief.
"I wasn't abandoned?"
Vance shook his head.
"Never."
He unfolded several classified photographs.
One showed Jonathan carrying a laughing little girl on his shoulders.
Another showed Eleanor kneeling beside the same child in a field of wildflowers.
The little girl wore the very blanket police had described decades earlier.
"You were loved beyond measure."
Maya covered her mouth.
All those birthdays spent wondering why no one came.
All those nights imagining she had not been wanted.
Every cruel word.
Every insult.
Every accusation.
Gone.
She had never been unwanted.
She had been lost.
Across the room, Daniel slowly approached.
"I'm so sorry."
Maya looked at him quietly.
"For what?"
"For not defending you."
She nodded once.
"You weren't silent because you doubted them."
He lowered his head.
"You were silent because you feared losing your inheritance."
Daniel closed his eyes.
She was right.
Every word.
Victoria suddenly stood.
"This changes nothing."
Everyone turned.
"Blood doesn't erase upbringing."
She pointed toward Maya.
"She still grew up in orphanages."
"And she still embarrassed this family."
Colonel Vance's patience finally ended.
"No."
His voice thundered through the room.
"You embarrassed yourself."
He reached into the folder again.
"There is one more document."
Victoria frowned.
"What document?"
"The last will of General Jonathan Hale."
Everyone froze.
Jonathan had amended his estate just weeks before his final mission.
In the event his daughter was ever found alive...
Every charitable foundation...
Every family estate...
Every historical property...
Every investment held in trust...
Would immediately transfer to her.
The value exceeded one point four billion dollars.
Victoria's face turned white.
But Maya barely noticed.
She wasn't thinking about money.
She was staring at a photograph.
Her mother smiling.
Her father laughing.
May you like
For the first time...
She knew what home looked like.
