Chapter 2: The Truth Walks Through the Door

Chapter 2: The Truth Walks Through the Door

Exactly twelve minutes later...

The ballroom doors opened.

Every head turned.

An older man in a simple navy suit walked inside.

His silver hair was neatly combed.

His posture was straight.

There was nothing flashy about him.

But behind him came six attorneys.

Then two uniformed sheriff's deputies.

Finally, a sharply dressed woman carrying a thick leather briefcase.

Margaret frowned.

"What is this?"

The older man ignored her completely.

He walked straight to Mia.

Knelt beside her.

His eyes filled with tears as he gently brushed the dried gravy from her hair.

"My brave girl."

"I'm sorry Grandpa," Mia whispered.

He hugged her tightly.

"You have nothing to apologize for."

Then he stood.

Slowly.

Calmly.

And faced David.

"My name is Robert Harrison."

Several guests exchanged confused looks.

The name sounded familiar.

The woman with the briefcase stepped forward.

"Ladies and gentlemen," she announced.

"I serve as legal counsel for Harrison Industries."

A ripple swept across the ballroom.

Harrison Industries.

One of the largest privately owned manufacturing companies in the state.

The company that employed thousands of people.

Including...

David.

Including Margaret's retirement fund through company stock.

Including the very bank financing David's new business venture.

Margaret's face turned white.

Robert looked directly at David.

"When Julia married into this family, she asked me never to interfere."

"I respected her wishes."

"But tonight..."

He looked at Mia.

"You assaulted my granddaughter."

The deputies stepped toward Margaret.

One of them spoke calmly.

"Ma'am, multiple witnesses and several videos have captured what happened."

Margaret's mouth opened.

Nothing came out.

David finally found his voice.

"Sir... we can explain..."

Robert shook his head.

"No."

"You've been explaining for years."

"Tonight, I'm finished listening."

He turned to Julia.

"You and Mia are coming home."

Julia's eyes filled with tears.

For the first time in years...
