CHAPTER 3: ONE YEAR LATER

CHAPTER 3: ONE YEAR LATER
One year later, the mansion on Willow Crest Drive had changed.
The silence was gone.
The fear was gone.
And the little girl who once scrubbed floors on her knees barely resembled the child she used to be.
Ava laughed now.
A lot.
She joined a soccer team.
Made friends.
Started painting.
Her teachers described her as confident and bright.
Every achievement felt like a miracle to Ethan.
One Saturday afternoon, father and daughter sat together on the back porch overlooking the Nashville hills.
The sunset painted the sky gold and orange.
Ava leaned her head against his shoulder.
“Dad?”
“Yeah?”
“Do you ever feel guilty?”
Ethan swallowed hard.
“Every day.”
Ava looked up.
“But you saved me.”
The words hit him harder than any boardroom battle he'd ever faced.
“No, sweetheart.”
He smiled softly.
“You saved yourself. I just finally opened my eyes.”
For a moment neither spoke.
Then Ava handed him something.
A folded piece of paper.
It was another letter.
Ethan opened it carefully.
This one was much shorter.
Dear Dad,
Thank you for coming home early that day.
Love,
Ava
Ethan felt tears slide down his cheeks.
Not because of the pain they had survived.
But because of the future they still had.
He wrapped an arm around his daughter and pulled her close.
The sun slowly disappeared beyond the horizon.
And for the first time in a very long time...
May you like
They both felt safe.
The End.
