Every eye in the executive pantry shifted to Adrian.
For one impossible second, no one breathed.
Vanessa looked from him to me, waiting for an explanation that would preserve the world she had carefully built.
Adrian adjusted his cufflinks before answering.
"...She's an old family friend."
The words landed harder than Vanessa's slap.
Several employees exchanged confused glances.
An old family friend?
After twelve years of marriage?
I looked directly into my husband's eyes.
He couldn't even say my name.
Vanessa relaxed almost instantly.
"Oh," she laughed softly. "I thought she was someone important."
She slipped her arm naturally around Adrian's elbow.
"I had to teach her some manners."
Adrian's jaw tightened.
He noticed the red mark on my face.
He noticed the water soaking my blouse.
He noticed my phone still raised.
Yet he said nothing.
Not one word.
Not to ask whether I was hurt.
Not to ask what had happened.
Instead he looked at the security guards.
"It's fine," he said evenly.
"Everyone back to work."
The employees hesitated.
Nobody moved until Adrian repeated himself.
"I said back to work."
Slowly, the pantry emptied.
Only four people remained.
Adrian.
Vanessa.
The two security guards.
And me.
Vanessa smiled triumphantly.
"I knew you'd understand."
She leaned closer to Adrian.
"Some temporary workers forget their place."
I finally spoke.
"She hit me."
Adrian sighed as though I were creating unnecessary drama.
"Claire...not here."
Not here.
Those two words told me everything.
He wasn't shocked.
He wasn't angry.
He was embarrassed.
Embarrassed that I had appeared in his office without warning.
Embarrassed that his carefully managed image was cracking.
I unlocked my phone.
The photograph of Vanessa wearing my anniversary bracelet filled the screen.
"I found this."
Adrian's face lost all color.
Vanessa reached for his hand.
"Tell her."
He didn't.
Instead, he whispered,
"We'll discuss this at home."
I smiled.
"No."

His eyes narrowed.
"We'll discuss it in the boardroom."
