THE MAID WHO HEALED A BROKEN LITTLE HEART

CHAPTER 1: THE WOMAN THEY ERASED

"You promised he would never know."

The words struck Daniel Sterling harder than any accusation.

Around them, the ballroom remained frozen.

Guests exchanged confused glances. Cameras stopped flashing. Even the musicians had forgotten to play.

The young woman holding Oliver slowly stood.

Her maid uniform suddenly looked ridiculous.

Because the way she carried herself was not that of a servant.

It was the confidence of someone who had survived betrayal.

"Who is she?" one guest whispered.

Vanessa looked at Daniel.

"Daniel... what is she talking about?"

Daniel couldn't answer.

Because every word was true.

Five years earlier, before wealth, before board meetings, before his father's empire consumed his life, he had loved only one woman.

Emily Carter.

The woman now standing before him.

The mother of his son.

A gasp spread through the crowd as Emily spoke again.

"You told me your family would never take him from me."

Oliver clung to her shoulder.

Tears streamed down her face.

"They said I wasn't good enough. Not rich enough. Not important enough."

Daniel's mother, Margaret Sterling, rose from her chair.

"That's enough."

Emily turned toward her.

"No. For five years I've been silent."

The older woman's face hardened.

"You abandoned that child."

Emily laughed bitterly.

"Tell them the truth."

Silence.

"Tell them how your lawyers forged documents."

More silence.

"Tell them how you paid doctors and judges to declare me unfit."

The room exploded with shocked murmurs.

Daniel felt sick.

Because he had spent years believing Emily had left willingly.

Years.

His entire world suddenly cracked apart.

"What are you saying?" he whispered.

Emily looked directly into his eyes.

May you like

"They lied to both of us."

And for the first time in five years, Daniel realized the greatest betrayal of his life had come from his own family.
