Chapter 7: The Secret Society's Ultimatum

Chapter 7: The Secret Society's Ultimatum
Three days after Elena was reunited with her parents, the Carter estate had become the most heavily guarded private residence in the state.
Black SUVs patrolled the perimeter twenty-four hours a day.
Additional security cameras had been installed overnight.
Every visitor was screened before entering the grounds.
William Carter refused to take chances.
He had spent twenty-seven years searching for his daughter.
He would not lose her again.
Inside the estate, however, life was slowly beginning to feel normal.
For the first time since her daughter's birth, Elena slept through the night.
The nursery overlooked the estate's rose garden, where the morning sun streamed through tall windows.
Her mother, Catherine Carter, quietly rocked the baby in a wooden chair.
"She has your eyes," Catherine whispered with a smile.
Elena laughed softly.
"Everyone keeps saying that."
"They're right."
Catherine looked at her daughter with unmistakable pride.
"I missed your first steps."
"Your first day of school."
"Your graduation."
She paused, her voice growing quiet.
"But I'd like to be here for everything from now on."
Elena reached over and squeezed her mother's hand.
"You will be."
For a brief moment, the pain of the past gave way to hope for the future.
Across the estate, William stood in his study with Daniel Harper.
A digital map covered one wall.
Red markers identified every known member of the Hawthorne Society.
Twelve names.
Twelve fortunes.
Twelve powerful families.
Daniel pointed toward the screen.
"We've confirmed that five members are deceased."
"Three live overseas."
"Two are retired."
William nodded.
"And the remaining two?"
Daniel zoomed in.
"Richard Hawthorne."
He tapped the first profile.
"Founder of Hawthorne Financial Holdings."
"Estimated net worth: twelve billion dollars."
Then the second.
"Edward Langston."
"Former chairman of Langston Global Industries."
William stared silently at the names.
Both men had attended Elena's third birthday party.
Both men had stood beside him while police searched the estate.
Both men had promised to help.
One of them...
Could have betrayed him.
Daniel broke the silence.
"There is something else."
William looked up.
"What?"
Daniel placed a sealed envelope on the desk.
"It arrived this morning."
"No return address."
William carefully opened it.
Inside was a single black card embossed with a silver crest.
The Hawthorne Society emblem.
There was only one sentence.
Meet us tonight. Come alone.
Below it...
A location.
An abandoned private club on the outskirts of the city.
Daniel immediately objected.
"It's a trap."
William calmly folded the card.
"I know."
"You can't go."
"I have to."
"We'll send a tactical team."
William shook his head.
"If they wanted me dead..."
He held up the invitation.
"They wouldn't have invited me."
Daniel still wasn't convinced.
"They're trying to intimidate you."
William smiled slightly.
"They're too late."
Meanwhile...
At the Ashford mansion...
The once-bustling estate felt strangely empty.
Half the household staff had resigned.
Luxury cars had disappeared from the garage after being repossessed by creditors.
Inside the dining room, Victoria sat alone at the enormous table.
Her breakfast remained untouched.
She stared at the newspaper.
ASHFORD GROUP FILES FOR CHAPTER 11 RESTRUCTURING
Another headline below it hurt even more.
MARK ASHFORD DECLINES TO RETURN AS CEO
Victoria crushed the newspaper in her hands.
She still couldn't understand her son's decision.
He could have returned.
He could have saved the company.
Instead...
He had chosen Elena.
A knock interrupted her thoughts.
The butler entered nervously.
"Madam..."
She looked up impatiently.
"What?"
"Someone is here to see you."
"I told everyone I'm not receiving visitors."
The butler hesitated.
"He said..."
"...you owe him a favor from twenty-seven years ago."
Victoria froze.
The color drained from her face.
"Bring him in."
Moments later, an elderly man entered the room.
He wore a tailored gray suit and carried an ebony walking cane.
His face was unfamiliar.
But the ring on his hand was not.
A silver signet ring engraved with the Hawthorne Society crest.
Victoria stood so quickly that her chair nearly tipped over.
"You..."
The man smiled faintly.
"It's been a long time."
"What are you doing here?"
"I came to remind you of something."
His voice remained calm.
"You've always been terrible under pressure."
Victoria's breathing grew uneven.
"I don't know what you're talking about."
The man chuckled.
"You always say that before you panic."
He slowly sat across from her.
"You've made quite a mess."
Victoria lowered her voice.
"If William Carter finds out..."
"He won't."
The man interrupted.
"Unless you lose control."
Victoria clenched her fists.
"You promised no one would ever know."
"I promised to protect everyone."
He leaned forward.
"But lately..."
"...you're becoming difficult to protect."
That evening...
William arrived alone at the abandoned Hawthorne Club.
At least...
That was what the invitation expected.
Hidden several hundred yards away, Daniel's surveillance team monitored every entrance with long-range cameras.
William entered through the massive wooden doors.
Dust covered the marble floor.
The once-grand ballroom stood abandoned.
Only one room remained lit.
The library.
He walked inside.
Two elderly men waited beside a fireplace.
Richard Hawthorne.
Edward Langston.
Both rose as William entered.
Richard spoke first.
"It's been a long time."
William remained standing.
"Let's not pretend this is a reunion."
Edward sighed.
"We hoped you'd say that."
William looked directly at them.
"Which one of you betrayed my family?"
Neither answered immediately.
Instead...
Richard poured three glasses of whiskey.
William ignored the drink.
"I didn't come here to socialize."
Edward finally spoke.
"You've misunderstood everything."
William's eyes narrowed.
"Then explain."
Richard slowly removed his glasses.
"The Hawthorne Society didn't order Elena's kidnapping."
William remained silent.
"But..."
Richard continued.
"Someone used our connections."
Edward added quietly,
"We didn't know until it was too late."
William's jaw tightened.
"I don't believe you."
Richard nodded.
"I expected that."
He reached into his jacket.
William instinctively tensed.
Instead of a weapon...
Richard produced a faded photograph.
He placed it on the table.
William looked down.
The picture showed twelve men standing together at a charity gala.
The Hawthorne Society.
Then his eyes widened.
Near the edge of the photograph stood someone he hadn't expected.
Someone who had never officially belonged to the Society.
Victoria Ashford.
Young.
Elegant.
Smiling.
Standing beside Richard Hawthorne.
William slowly raised his eyes.
"Why was she there?"
Neither man answered.
The silence itself became an answer.
William's heartbeat quickened.
For the first time...
He realized Victoria Ashford's hatred toward Elena might not have begun three years ago.
It might have begun twenty-seven years earlier.
Richard looked directly into William's eyes.
"There is something about Victoria..."
He paused.
"...that your daughter still doesn't know."
William's voice dropped to a whisper.
"What?"
Richard answered with only seven words.
"She knew Elena before Elena knew herself."
William stood frozen.
Outside, Daniel watched the surveillance monitor as William suddenly stopped moving.
Something had changed.
Something enormous.
Inside the abandoned clubhouse, Richard reached for another file lying on the table.
"If you truly want the whole truth..."
he said quietly,
May you like
"...everything begins with Victoria."
