Chapter 1: The Lie Unravels

Victoria forced herself to smile.
"You've misunderstood everything," she said, her voice trembling despite her effort to stay composed. "Claire was only a child. She imagined things."
The ballroom remained silent.
Ethan didn't blink.
"Did she imagine this too?"
He pulled another item from his jacket.
An old newspaper clipping.
The headline read:
UNKNOWN GIRL SAVES BOY FROM FIERY HIGHWAY CRASH
The faded photograph showed firefighters surrounding the wreckage.
Near the edge of the frame stood a little girl.
Barefoot.
Her dress torn.
One arm wrapped in a blue handkerchief identical to the one Ethan still carried.
Claire's breathing stopped.
"I remember..." she whispered.
Images flashed through her mind.
The smell of gasoline.
The unbearable heat.
The frightened boy trapped inside.
And Victoria...
Standing over her later that night.
"If you ever tell anyone what happened," Victoria had warned, "they'll think you started the fire."
Claire had believed her.
She had stayed silent for ten years.
Sophia suddenly stepped backward.
"Mom..."
Victoria turned toward her daughter.
"Don't say a word."
But Sophia's eyes filled with tears.
"I can't do this anymore."
Every guest stared.
"I wasn't the girl who saved him."
Gasps echoed across the ballroom.
"I knew the truth."
"I let everyone believe it because Mom told me our family needed the money... the scholarships... the attention."
Victoria grabbed Sophia's arm.
"Enough!"
Sophia pulled away.
"No."
"I'm done lying."

For the first time in ten years...
The truth belonged to Claire again.
