Chapter 12 - The Dead Man's Warning

The letter had been sealed for nearly four years.

Victoria had never opened it.

At least that was what she claimed.

Khloe broke the seal with trembling fingers.

Marcus stood beside her.

The letter began simply.

Khloe,

If you are reading this, then Victoria has finally decided that protecting this family with secrets has caused more damage than telling the truth.

Victoria looked away.

Khloe continued.

My greatest mistake was believing I could build an empire without creating men who believed they were entitled to own it.

Warren Sloan is one of those men.

Marcus stared at the page.

His father had known.

The letter described an event from twenty-two years earlier.

Thorne Global had nearly collapsed during an aggressive expansion.

Warren had secretly arranged financing through investors connected to organized financial fraud.

Marcus's father discovered the scheme.

Instead of reporting Warren immediately, he forced him to surrender his partnership rights and remain as legal counsel under strict oversight.

It had been a terrible compromise.

Warren never forgave him.

Khloe continued reading.

If Warren ever attempts to recover control, he will not attack Marcus directly.

He will attack legitimacy.

Marriage.

Inheritance.

Trust.

Family.

Because those are the foundations on which the company now rests.

Marcus sat down.

Victoria whispered.

“Your father believed Warren had changed.”

Damian scoffed.

“Clearly.”

Khloe reached the final paragraph.

There is one protection Warren does not know exists.

It does not belong to Marcus.

It does not belong to Victoria.

It belongs to you.

Khloe stopped.

Marcus looked at her.

“What?”

She continued.

If my grandson or granddaughter is threatened because of this company, contact Samuel Pierce at Northstar Trust and use the phrase Bellweather Twenty-Seven.

Khloe looked up.

“Who is Samuel Pierce?”

Victoria's face changed.

“I thought he was dead.”

Damian immediately searched the name.

Samuel Pierce was eighty-two years old.

Former federal judge.

Current chairman emeritus of Northstar Trust.

And very much alive.

Marcus called.

A woman answered.

The moment Marcus said Bellweather Twenty-Seven, the conversation changed.

“Put Mrs. Thorne on the phone.”

Khloe took the call.

An elderly voice greeted her.

“Mrs. Thorne.”

“Mr. Pierce?”

“I've been waiting almost four years.”

Khloe felt chills.

“What is Bellweather Twenty-Seven?”

“A contingency.”

“For what?”

“For exactly what is happening now.”

Samuel explained that Marcus's father had quietly placed twelve percent of Thorne Global into a sealed protective trust before his death.

Those shares appeared dormant.

They were not.

They could be activated under one condition.

Evidence that someone had attempted to manipulate succession through violence, coercion, fraud, or harm to an unborn beneficiary.

Khloe stared at Marcus.

“Isabella's attack activates it.”

“Yes.”

“Who controls the twelve percent?”

Samuel paused.

“You do.”

The room became completely silent.

Khloe now had enough voting authority to stop Warren.

Perhaps enough to destroy his takeover entirely.

Marcus exhaled.

“We can end this.”

Samuel's next words killed the relief.

“Not yet.”

“Why?”

“Because the trust requires certified evidence presented in person.”

“The video.”

“Yes.”

“We have it.”

“Do you?”

Marcus frowned.

Damian checked the hospital security system.

The original recording still existed.

Then the screen flashed.

FILE CORRUPTED.

The backup failed.

Another backup failed.

Damian's cyber chief called seconds later.

Someone had triggered a coordinated deletion attack.

Every digital copy of Isabella assaulting Khloe was disappearing.

Marcus looked at the security director.

“The original server.”

The director went pale.

“It's in the basement data center.”

Damian grabbed his phone.

“Lock it down.”

May you like

Too late.

A fire alarm began screaming throughout the hospital.
