Chapter 18 - The Child Who Came Early

Three days after the lake-house shooting, Khloe went into labor.

This time the doctors could not stop it.

Marcus stood beside her with his arm in a sling.

Damian remained outside the delivery room.

Victoria paced the corridor.

Lillian sat silently beside her brother.

Even Julian, under federal supervision, was allowed to wait in a guarded room downstairs.

The baby arrived at 3:17 in the morning.

Eight weeks early.

For several terrifying seconds, he made no sound.

Khloe stared at the medical team.

“Why isn't he crying?”

Marcus squeezed her hand.

Then a tiny cry broke through the room.

Khloe began sobbing.

Marcus lowered his forehead against hers.

Their son weighed just over four pounds.

He was immediately transferred to neonatal intensive care.

They named him Alexander Hale Thorne.

For Khloe's family.

For Marcus's family.

And perhaps for the hope that he could someday belong to neither family's mistakes.

The following days passed in a strange combination of joy and fear.

Alexander needed breathing support.

Then less support.

Then none.

Khloe spent hours beside the incubator.

Marcus rarely left.

One evening, she looked at him through the glass.

“You could go back to work.”

“I know.”

“You're still chairman.”

“I know.”

“Then why are you here?”

Marcus looked at his son.

“Because my father was right.”

“About what?”

“The company isn't the thing worth saving.”

Khloe studied him.

“So what happens now?”

Marcus sat beside her.

“I step down.”

Khloe stared.

“What?”

“Not forever.”

“But for now.”

He explained that an independent executive committee would manage Thorne Global during the investigations.

Victoria would retire from active governance.

Outside directors would review every trust mechanism.

No more secret family control.

No more inherited executive authority without oversight.

Khloe almost smiled.

“Your mother agreed to that?”

“She used words I won't repeat near our son.”

Khloe laughed for the first time since the attack.

Then her expression softened.

“And us?”

Marcus knew this question mattered more.

“I don't expect you to forget what I hid.”

“Good.”

“I don't expect one apology to fix it.”

“Also good.”

“I just want the chance to become someone you don't have to investigate before trusting.”

Khloe looked through the incubator.

“I still love you.”

Marcus swallowed.

“But?”

“But love isn't the same thing as trust.”

“I know.”

“You'll have to rebuild that.”

“I will.”

Khloe finally took his hand.

Across the city, Isabella Rossi signed a cooperation agreement.

She pleaded guilty to aggravated assault and conspiracy charges.

Her testimony connected Warren to the planned medical attack.

Natalie Cross was charged with attempted murder.

Elaine received limited immunity in exchange for cooperation.

Julian pleaded guilty to fraud and conspiracy.

His sentence had not yet been determined.

Lillian resigned from every Hale Foundation board.

Victoria announced her retirement.

The empire that had seemed untouchable only weeks earlier was being dismantled piece by piece.

Then Damian entered the NICU.

His expression made Khloe's smile disappear.

“What?”

He handed Marcus a waterproof evidence bag.

Inside was a phone.

“Divers recovered this beneath Warren's dock.”

Marcus frowned.

“His phone?”

“Yes.”

“It still works?”

“Enough.”

Investigators had recovered one unsent draft message.

Khloe read it.

IF I DON'T MAKE IT OUT, RELEASE FILE PHOENIX.

Marcus looked at Damian.

“What is File Phoenix?”

Damian's expression darkened.

“We don't know.”

Then his phone rang.

He listened.

His face changed.

“Actually.”

May you like

He ended the call.

“I think we're about to find out.”
