Chapter 10 - The Fall on Camera

Sarah crawled until her knees bled.

The ventilation shaft twisted above the gymnasium.

At one point she heard men moving beneath her.

At another, she heard someone call Marcus directly.

"We missed her."

Sarah continued.

Twenty minutes later, she kicked through another grate and dropped onto the gym floor.

She ran.

She crossed the courtyard.

Scaled the wall.

Reached her car.

Only after driving five miles did she allow herself to breathe.

At home, Sarah locked every window.

She connected the drive.

The security file loaded.

Her finger hovered over the mouse.

For one irrational second, she did not want to see it.

Knowing was different from watching.

But Lily deserved a witness who would not look away.

Sarah pressed play.

Children moved across the playground.

Lily appeared.

She climbed the stairs toward the high bridge.

Leo followed.

They stopped near the railing.

Leo pointed downward.

Lily shook her head.

He pointed again.

She shook her head harder.

Then Henderson's description became horribly clear.

Leo stepped backward.

One step.

Two.

He lowered his body slightly.

Then he rushed forward.

Both hands struck Lily's back.

Her body flew beyond the railing.

She vanished from the frame.

Sarah covered her mouth.

Leo approached the edge.

He looked down.

Any normal child would have panicked.

Screamed.

Called an adult.

Leo did none of those things.

He simply watched.

Then he turned around.

Chloe stood several feet away.

Leo walked toward her.

Even without sound, Sarah could read the threat in his posture.

Then he smiled.

Sarah paused the video.

Tears finally came.

Not quietly.

Not gracefully.

She bent over the table and sobbed.

All the professional control she had carried for days collapsed.

Her little girl had not slipped.

She had not fallen during rough play.

Someone had deliberately gathered momentum and launched her from a twelve-foot structure.

Sarah cried until she could breathe again.

Then she straightened.

She copied the footage onto three separate drives.

One went inside a kitchen vent.

One went beneath a loose floorboard.

The third stayed in her pocket.

She uploaded an encrypted copy to a cloud account.

Then Sarah looked again at the frozen image of Leo.

Her grief changed shape.

It became purpose.

Marcus Thorne had spent years buying silence.

Sarah finally possessed something money could not rewrite.

May you like

A camera had seen everything.

And cameras did not accept checks.
