Chapter 17 - The Empire Cracks

The ballroom doors opened.

Assistant District Attorney Elena Rostova entered first.

Behind her came State Police officers.

Not city police.

Not Marcus's people.

Marcus recognized the difference immediately.

Elena raised a document.

"Marcus Thorne."

"You are being detained pending investigation into obstruction of justice, witness intimidation, evidence tampering, conspiracy, and additional related offenses."

Marcus stared at her.

"You don't have jurisdiction."

"Actually, I do."

His lawyers rushed forward.

Elena smiled.

"And I'd recommend your attorneys stop speaking until they've watched the approximately eighty-seven videos currently being uploaded from this room."

Marcus turned.

Guests were still recording.

The playground footage remained frozen on the screen behind him.

His entire reputation had collapsed in less than six minutes.

Officers moved toward him.

Marcus backed away.

"I built this city."

Elena shook her head.

"You donated to it."

"There's a difference."

The cuffs closed around his wrists.

Marcus fought.

"Do you know who I am?"

Sarah answered from across the room.

"Finally."

"Everyone does."

Social services workers approached Leo.

The boy reacted instantly.

He kicked one worker.

Tried biting another.

Knocked over a chair.

Guests recoiled.

Marcus shouted.

"Don't touch my son!"

An officer restrained him.

Leo screamed.

"Dad!"

Marcus could do nothing.

For perhaps the first time in Leo's life, his father could not make the problem disappear.

The principal attempted to leave quietly.

Elena pointed toward him.

"Mr. Carmichael."

He stopped.

"We'll need to discuss the security system you claimed was broken."

His shoulders collapsed.

Mayor Sterling stood frozen beside a table.

Journalists surrounded him.

"Mayor, when did you learn about the footage?"

"Did your office have prior knowledge?"

"How long have you known Marcus Thorne?"

Sterling looked toward Sarah.

She felt no sympathy.

Captain Miller approached next.

He looked exhausted.

"We searched the apartment again."

Sarah waited.

"Forensics found prints belonging to two members of Thorne's private security team."

Sarah said nothing.

"The narcotics were planted."

"I know."

"We're clearing you."

"I know."

Miller swallowed.

"Your badge can be reinstated."

Sarah finally looked at him.

"The badge wasn't the problem."

Miller understood.

"The people wearing them were."

He lowered his eyes.

Sarah walked past him.

The ballroom behind her was chaos.

Marcus was being escorted outside.

Leo was being taken into protective psychiatric custody.

Reporters were broadcasting live.

Donors were fleeing cameras.

Politicians were calling attorneys.

Sarah walked into the cold night.

She had imagined this moment for days.

She expected triumph.

Instead, only one thought mattered.

Lily.

May you like

Sarah ran to her car.

Because none of this meant anything until she saw her daughter open her eyes.
