Chapter 16 - The Trap Closes

The metallic click of Sterling’s hammer cocking back echoed like thunder in the sealed room.
"Don't move," Sterling warned, his eyes locked on me with predatory satisfaction. He kept the gun trained squarely on Mara. "Aris, secure the girl."
Aris stepped forward, pulling a pair of heavy tactical zip-ties from his jacket pocket. He didn't look like a terrified scientist anymore; his movements were cold, clinical, and completely devoid of remorse. He grabbed Evie by the arm, jerking her away from the window.
Evie didn't struggle. Her face was a mask of cold fury. "You miscalculated, Arthur," she whispered.
Sterling laughed, a dry, humorless sound. "My calculations are absolute, child. Look around you. The compound is locked down. The airspace is restricted. You are three hundred feet above the Pacific Ocean with no wings."
I tightened my grip on our baby. The infant didn't cry. His luminous silver eyes were fixed on Sterling, glowing with a faint, pulsing luminescence that made the overhead emergency lights flicker.
"You want him," I said, my voice shaking with a rage so hot it burned my throat. I stepped in front of Mara, shielding her body with my own. "Take him. But let Mara go."
"David, no!" Mara gasped, gripping my arm, her strength returning out of pure maternal terror. "You don't bargain with monsters!"
"Mr. Vance, you are in no position to negotiate," Sterling smiled, stepping closer. The barrel of his gun was only feet away from my chest now. "The Apex is the future of human evolution. A woman can be replaced. A generational mutation cannot."
He raised his hand, signaling Aris to close the distance and take the baby from my arms.
Aris stepped toward me, his hands outstretched. "Give him to me, David. Make this painless."
"Painless?" A voice echoed from the dark corridor behind Sterling.
Sterling froze. The smile vanished from his face.
From the shadows of the hallway, a figure limped forward. It was one of the private medics Aris had assigned to Mara earlier. But as she pulled off her medical cap and surgical mask, her face was battered, bruised, and smeared with dried blood.
It was the young security guard from the Solara Grand resort in Mexico.
"How did you—?" Sterling started to turn, his eyes widening in shock.
The young guard didn't hesitate. He lunged forward with a surgical scalpel he had hidden in his sleeve, driving it straight into Aris’s shoulder. Aris screamed, collapsing to the floor in a heap.
In that split second of utter distraction, Evie moved.
She didn't run toward the door. She slammed her palm directly into the reinforced glass control panel by the window, short-circuiting the manual override with a burst of static energy drawn from the baby's pulse.
CLANG.
The heavy steel shutters over the ocean view flew open, letting the roaring sound of the crashing waves and the bright moonlight flood the room.

"Shoot them!" Sterling roared, stumbling back and swinging his gun toward the guard.
I didn't wait. I lunged forward, tackling Sterling around the waist just as he pulled the trigger.
