Chapter 1: The First Helicopter

Chapter 1: The First Helicopter
Richard frowned.
"What did you just say?"
I didn't answer him.
The encrypted phone remained against my ear.
The calm voice responded.
"Copy that. Tactical recovery team is airborne. Estimated arrival: eleven minutes. Federal notification has been activated. Preserve the scene. Do not engage unless necessary."
The line disconnected.
Richard burst into laughter.
"A helicopter?" he mocked. "Federal agents? You really expect me to believe that?"
Around him, several guests chuckled nervously.
The Chief of Police finally wandered over from the backyard, wiping barbecue sauce from his fingers.
"Arthur," he sighed, "this isn't the way to handle a family disagreement."
Family disagreement.
I stared at him.
"My daughter has bruises around her neck."
He shrugged.
"I haven't examined her."
"But you're already calling it a disagreement."
The chief's expression hardened.
"You should leave before you create a disturbance."
Richard smirked.
"I told you."
"My family owns this town."
Then...
A deep rumble echoed across the sky.
Every head turned upward.
Two black helicopters appeared over the tree line.
They flew low.
No markings.
No local registration.
They circled once before hovering over the estate.
The wind from the rotors scattered Easter decorations across the lawn.
Plastic eggs rolled into flower beds.
White tablecloths whipped through the air.
Children screamed—not from fear, but excitement.
The adults knew better.
Six operators in dark tactical uniforms fast-roped onto the property.
No patches.
No names.
Only one word embroidered on their body armor.
FEDERAL.
The team leader walked directly toward me.
"Arthur."
I nodded once.
He looked at Lily through the truck window.
Then at Richard.
"Is that him?"
"Yes."
The operator raised one hand.
Richard was surrounded in less than three seconds.
"What is the meaning of this?" Richard shouted.
The Chief of Police stepped forward.
"I'm ordering you off this property!"
The team leader calmly held up a federal badge.
"Stand down."
The chief's face lost all color.
"You... you're with Washington?"
"We answer to a level above your jurisdiction."
Richard laughed again.
"My lawyers will bury every one of you."
The operator didn't even blink.
"We're not here because of your lawyers."
"We're here because of him."
He pointed at me.
Every eye followed.
Richard slowly turned toward me.
"Who... are you?"
I looked at my daughter sleeping inside the truck.
"Just a father."
"But before that..."
May you like
"I served my country in ways you were never cleared to know."
The silence that followed was heavier than anything Richard had ever experienced.
