CHAPTER 2: THE WAITRESS WHO WASN’T AFRAID

The room waited for Alexander Blackwood to explode.

Nobody spoke to him like that.

Nobody challenged him.

But instead of ordering security to remove her, Alexander asked:

"How do you know?"

The waitress swallowed.

Her name was Emily Carter.

Twenty-nine years old.

A single mother working two jobs to pay her bills.

She looked nothing like the wealthy people surrounding them.

But she looked at the baby differently.

Like she understood him.

"Because he keeps pulling his legs upward," Emily explained.

"His fists are tight. His face turns red before he cries."

Alexander stared.

She continued.

"That's not attention crying."

A doctor nearby frowned.

"Are you saying you know more than specialists?"

Emily shook her head.

"No."

She looked at the newborn.

"I'm saying babies communicate before they can speak."

The words hit Alexander harder than he expected.

Because his wife, Isabella, had died during childbirth three weeks earlier.

And since then...

Everyone had treated his son like a fragile business problem.

Nobody had treated him like a baby.

Emily gently touched the blanket.

"Has he been drinking normally?"

Alexander nodded.

"Yes."

"Sleeping?"

"Almost none."

"Did the crying begin after feeding?"

Alexander stopped.

Because suddenly...

He remembered.

"Yes."

Emily looked at him.

"Then I think I know what's wrong."
