The mansion did not feel like a home anymore.
It felt like a courtroom.
After the stepmother was taken away, silence filled every corridor—thick, suffocating, unnatural. The baby’s soft cries from the nursery were the only thing anchoring the young mother to reality.
She sat on the edge of the bed, still holding the broken photo frame. Her cheek burned where the slap had landed, but the pain inside her chest was worse.
Her husband stood by the window, phone still in his hand.
“Why didn’t you tell me sooner?” he asked quietly.
She let out a bitter laugh through trembling lips.
“Would you have believed me?”
That question hit harder than any accusation.
He didn’t answer.
Because he wasn’t sure.
Downstairs, footsteps echoed. Security was clearing out drawers, documents, and anything tied to the stepmother’s name. The empire she built on fear was being dismantled piece by piece.
But something felt unfinished.
The housekeeper lingered in the doorway.
“There’s something you should see,” she said softly.
