Chapter 1: The Bag That Held a Mother's Last Goodbye
The woman froze just before stepping into the waiting limousine.
The little girl clung to the edge of the handbag, tears streaming down her face.
"Please... don't take it. Please!"
Hotel security rushed forward.
"Ma'am, step away from the child."
Several guests shook their heads.
"These street kids will grab anything."
"Someone call the police."
The elegant woman slowly looked down at the trembling child.
"What are you talking about?" she asked softly.
The girl could barely breathe.
"My mommy... my mommy left that bag for me."
Silence.
Everyone stared.
The woman frowned.
"This handbag is mine. I bought it years ago."
The little girl shook her head desperately.
"No... not the outside."
With shaking fingers, she pointed toward a tiny hidden zipper sewn inside the lining.
"My mom stitched a little pocket there."
The woman hesitated before opening it.
Her expression changed instantly.
Inside lay a tiny faded photograph.
A young mother smiled while holding a newborn baby wrapped in a pink blanket.
Behind the photo was a folded letter.
The elegant woman's hands began to tremble.
"I... I've never seen this before."
The little girl whispered,
"My mommy worked here as a cleaner. She hid the picture inside because she was afraid someone would steal it."
The entire hotel lobby became perfectly still.
Every judgmental whisper disappeared.
