Chapter 2: A Secret Hidden in Silence

Chapter 2: A Secret Hidden in Silence

The next morning, Jonathan asked Emily to join him for breakfast.

She looked terrified.

"I suppose... I'm being dismissed."

Jonathan shook his head.

"No."

He slid a folder across the table.

Inside were payroll records.

Medical receipts.

School notes.

Handwritten letters from Oliver's teachers.

Every single document mentioned Emily.

"She comforts him."

"She attends every school event."

"He only eats when Emily is nearby."

Jonathan looked up.

"Why didn't anyone tell me?"

The house manager hesitated.

"Because you were always traveling."

Each word struck harder than the last.

Emily quietly stood.

"I never wanted to replace his mother."

"You didn't."

Jonathan answered.

"You protected what she left behind."

For the first time, Emily met his eyes.

"I made her a promise."

Jonathan froze.

"What promise?"

The maid slowly reached into her pocket.

She removed an old silver necklace.

Jonathan recognized it immediately.

It had belonged to his late wife, Catherine.

Emily whispered,

"The night before she died... she held my hand."

She fought back tears.

"She said, 'If Jonathan loses himself in work... promise me our son will never feel alone.'"

Jonathan's entire body shook.

His wife had trusted Emily.

Not because Emily was family.

Not because she was wealthy.

May you like

But because she possessed something far more precious.

A heart that never abandoned a child.
