Chapter 14 - What Victor Left Behind

Victor survived.

Barely.

Doctors operated for seven hours.

When we learned he would live, Nathaniel sat down in the hospital hallway and covered his face with both hands.

My mother sat beside him.

For several minutes, neither spoke.

Then she quietly reached for his hand.

Nathaniel looked at her.

She did not pull away.

I pretended not to notice.

Three floors below us, federal agents guarded Marcus Calder.

This time, Dante had personally chosen every guard.

Calder was not escaping again.

The archive from the Graves vault had been partially destroyed.

The surviving records were turned over to federal investigators.

Dozens of criminal investigations began almost immediately.

Nathaniel voluntarily surrendered financial documents connected to his father’s organization.

That surprised everyone.

Especially his own lawyers.

“You understand this could destroy Graves Industries.”

Nathaniel looked at me.

“Then we build something else.”

Several days later, Victor woke.

Nathaniel brought my mother and me into his room.

Victor looked terrible.

But his voice was still sharp.

“Ruby.”

“Hi.”

“You saved several hundred people because you noticed a missing light.”

“I watch my mom fix things.”

Victor looked toward my mother.

“You did more with nothing than we did with billions.”

She did not forgive him.

Not yet.

But she nodded.

Victor handed Nathaniel a sealed envelope.

“What is this?”

“My confession.”

Nathaniel frowned.

“To what?”

“Everything.”

Victor described the lies he had helped Calder create.

The threats against my mother.

The falsified financial documents.

The manipulation after Nathaniel’s father died.

He had signed it all.

“Why?”

Nathaniel asked.

Victor looked toward the window.

“Because Calder will claim he acted under your authority.”

“This clears you.”

“It ruins you.”

“Yes.”

Victor smiled faintly.

“I have been ruined for years.”

“I simply had enough money that nobody noticed.”

My mother studied him.

“You expect forgiveness?”

“No.”

“Good.”

Victor looked at me again.

“I expect consequences.”

That was the first thing he had said that my mother respected.

Outside the room, Nathaniel stopped us.

“There’s another problem.”

Dante handed him a tablet.

Calder had made one final move before the bank.

He had sent copies of edited documents to several newspapers.

The documents made Nathaniel appear responsible for kidnappings, murders, and bribes committed by Calder.

My mother stared at the headlines.

“They’ll believe it.”

Nathaniel nodded.

“For a while.”

“What happens now?”

“I testify.”

Dante looked uncomfortable.

“Against Calder?”

“Against everyone.”

“Including your father’s organization?”

“Yes.”

My mother looked at him carefully.

“That could get you killed.”

Nathaniel smiled without humor.

“That possibility is not new.”

I grabbed his hand.

“It is to me.”

He looked down.

I continued.

“You just found me.”

His face softened.

“So don’t do anything stupid.”

Dante turned away to hide a smile.

Nathaniel squeezed my hand gently.

“I’ll try.”

May you like

But the next morning, Nathaniel Graves walked into federal court.

And for the first time in American history, the head of the Graves empire prepared to tell the truth about everything.
