Chapter 4 - The Secret Beneath the Bracelet

Nathaniel watched Calder’s message twice.

He did not blink either time.

My mother struggled against the ropes.

Her face was bruised, but her eyes were furious.

That made me feel slightly less terrified.

Calder loved hearing himself speak.

“You have ninety minutes.”

“Pier Nine.”

“Come without federal police.”

“Bring Ruby.”

Then the screen went black.

Nathaniel immediately turned to Dante.

“Trace it.”

“Already working.”

“I’m going.”

“So am I.”

Nathaniel looked at me sharply.

“No.”

I crossed my arms.

“You can’t save my mom if you don’t know why he wants me.”

Dante raised an eyebrow.

Nathaniel stared at me.

I touched my bracelet.

“He kept looking at this.”

Nathaniel’s eyes followed my fingers.

“Your mother never took that bracelet off.”

“She told me somebody special gave it to her.”

“I did.”

My heart beat faster.

Nathaniel held out his hand.

“May I?”

I hesitated.

Then removed the bracelet.

He examined the inside.

His thumb brushed across the letters.

E.

N.

G.

“Elena.”

“Nathaniel.”

“Graves.”

I looked at him.

“You had your initials together?”

“We were young.”

For one second, his expression softened.

Then his thumb stopped.

“There’s something wrong.”

Dante leaned closer.

“What?”

“The clasp.”

Nathaniel pressed a fingernail beneath the small silver hinge.

A tiny section opened.

Something smaller than a grain of rice slid into his palm.

A memory chip.

Every person nearby became silent.

Nathaniel looked stunned.

“I never put this here.”

Dante immediately carried it toward a secure computer.

“What could be on it?”

Nathaniel was already guessing.

“Something Elena wanted hidden.”

The chip was inserted.

A password request appeared.

Dante tried Elena’s birthday.

Wrong.

Nathaniel tried the date they had met.

Wrong.

I stared at the screen.

Then I remembered something.

“My mom always says October seventeenth is the day her life began.”

Nathaniel looked at me.

“That’s your birthday.”

I nodded.

He entered the numbers.

The screen unlocked.

Folders appeared.

Bank transactions.

Names.

Photographs.

Audio recordings.

Dante swore quietly.

Nathaniel’s face hardened.

“What is all this?”

An analyst began opening files.

“Financial transfers connected to Graves companies from eleven years ago.”

“Transfers you apparently never authorized.”

Nathaniel leaned closer.

Millions of dollars had been moved through secret accounts.

The authorization signatures carried his name.

They were forged.

Then another file opened.

A recorded conversation began playing.

Marcus Calder’s voice filled the room.

“If the Graves boy leaves, we lose everything.”

Another man answered.

“Then remove the woman.”

Calder laughed.

“No.”

“She might be useful.”

The recording continued.

“Make her believe Nathaniel ordered the hit on her brother.”

My mother’s brother had died eleven years earlier.

She had never talked about him.

Nathaniel stared at the speaker.

The color disappeared from his face again.

Calder continued.

“And make Nathaniel believe Elena ran because she betrayed him.”

I finally understood.

Calder had destroyed them both.

But the recording was not finished.

A third voice asked one final question.

“What if Elena is pregnant?”

Calder answered.

“Then Graves must never learn the child exists.”

Nathaniel turned toward me.

No one spoke.

I could hear my own breathing.

May you like

I whispered the only question that mattered.

“Am I your daughter?”
