CHAPTER 1: THE THING UNDER THE HAT

CHAPTER 1: THE THING UNDER THE HAT
The nurse didnât call security right away.
She couldnât.
Her hands were still frozen mid-air, the edge of the blue knit hat lifted just enough to reveal what no child should ever be hiding in a hospital.
There were no signs of a fall.
No bruises that matched an accident.
Instead, what she saw was carefully concealed traumaâdamage that had been hidden, covered, and intentionally kept out of sight.
Toby immediately curled in on himself, shaking harder.
âDonât look,â he whispered. âPlease donât make him mad.â
That sentence changed everything.
The nurse slowly lowered the hat back into place, her voice steady even as her mind raced.
âNo one is going to hurt you here,â she said firmly.
But the stepdad had already moved.
He wasnât walking.
He was calculating.
Watching the door.
Watching the staff.
Watching for an exit.
And then he ran.
Not when questioned.
Not when confronted.
But the exact second he realized the hat was no longer hiding a secret.
It was exposing one.
Within seconds, hospital security was alerted.
May you like
But he was already gone.
Leaving behind only silence⊠and a child who suddenly looked even smaller than before.
