CHAPTER 2: THE BOY WHO WOULDN’T SPEAK

CHAPTER 2: THE BOY WHO WOULDN’T SPEAK

Child Protective Services arrived within the hour.

So did the police.

But Toby didn’t speak to anyone at first.

He only asked one question over and over again.

“Is he still outside?”

The nurse—whose name was Hannah—sat beside him quietly.

“No, sweetheart. He’s gone.”

That should have been comforting.

Instead, Toby cried harder.

Because fear doesn’t disappear just because the danger leaves the building.

It lingers.

Under skin.

Under memory.

Under winter hats.

As doctors carefully examined him, the truth became clearer—not from words, but from silence, hesitation, and the way Toby flinched every time footsteps approached the room.

Hannah stepped outside and spoke to the police.

“He didn’t run because he was guilty in the legal sense,” she said carefully. “He ran because he thought he still had control.”

A detective frowned. “Over what?”

Hannah looked back through the glass window at the boy.

“Over what the hat was hiding.”

The investigation began immediately.

Security footage.

Hospital intake records.

School attendance logs.

And slowly, a pattern began to emerge—one that painted a picture far darker than anyone in that ER had expected.

But Toby still wouldn’t say a word.

Until night came.

And he whispered something to Hannah that made her stomach drop.

“He told me if I ever took it off
I wouldn’t live in his house anymore.”
