Helena's fingers trembled as she turned the first brittle page.
The ink had faded.

Every entry was written in the same careful handwriting she remembered from years ago.

The mechanic who had disappeared the night of the accident.
The man everyone claimed had died when the bridge collapsed.
The first page carried only one sentence.

Helena felt her heartbeat thunder inside her chest.
She continued reading.
Each page peeled away another lie.
The accident that had left her paralyzed had never been an accident.
The brakes on her car had been deliberately cut.
The ambulance that arrived had been delayed.
The medical reports had been altered before reaching the hospital.
Someone wanted her alive...
But unable to walk.

"What is this?" he whispered.

Helena stared toward the alley.
The mysterious boy was gone.

Suddenly the elderly figure who had stepped from the shadows spoke for the first time.
"He waited ten years."
"He believed you deserved to know before he disappeared forever."
Helena looked up.
"Who is he?"
The old man smiled sadly.
"He is the son of the man who sacrificed everything to save you."
"And he has carried his father's promise every single day since."
Silence swallowed the square.
