Chapter 1 – The Letter She Never Wanted Him to Read
"GET OUT OF BED!" My Mother-in-Law Shouted, Accusing Me of Sleeping the Day Away—But the Moment She Pulled Back the Curtains, She Broke Down in Tears.
At exactly 11:18 a.m., Carol Bennett stormed up the staircase, her patience finally gone.
Since dawn, she'd been cooking breakfast for the entire family, cleaning every room after the wedding celebration, and entertaining relatives who refused to leave.
Everyone had been helping.
Everyone except one person.
Her son's brand-new wife.
Sophie.
Carol's jaw tightened.
There was only one conclusion.
The girl was spoiled.
Lazy.
And less than twenty-four hours into the marriage, she was already refusing to pull her weight.
She stopped outside the bedroom and pounded on the door.
"SOPHIE!"
No answer.
Not even a sound.
Carol shoved the door open.
The room felt unnaturally still.
The curtains were drawn.
The air was heavy.
Sophie lay beneath the blankets without moving.
Carol's frustration boiled over.

"I've had enough of this."
She crossed the room in three quick strides and yanked the curtains open.
Brilliant sunlight poured across the bed.
Then she froze.
Dark crimson stains had soaked through the white sheets.
Sophie didn't move.
Didn't blink.
Didn't even react to the light.
Her breathing was so shallow Carol could barely see her chest rise.
Her face had lost all color.
Her lips were almost blue.
Every ounce of anger disappeared.
"Sophie?"
Carol rushed to the bedside, her voice trembling.
She grabbed the young woman's hand.
It was ice-cold.
"Sophie... sweetheart... wake up."
Nothing.
Her eyes darted across the nightstand.
A hospital wristband.
A bottle of prescription pills.
A folded discharge summary.
With shaking hands, Carol unfolded the paperwork.
Her eyes locked onto a sentence printed in bold.
PATIENT DIAGNOSED WITH LIFE-THREATENING ANEMIA. ABSOLUTE BED REST REQUIRED. ANY PHYSICAL STRESS MAY RESULT IN ORGAN FAILURE.
Carol's knees nearly gave out.
"Oh, my God..."
The papers slipped from her fingers.
This wasn't laziness.
This wasn't disrespect.
Sophie hadn't been avoiding the family.
She had been fighting to stay alive.
And she had hidden every second of it.
"DANIEL!"
Carol's scream echoed through the house.
"GET THE CAR! RIGHT NOW!"
As she reached for Sophie's phone to call for help, her hand brushed against something hidden beneath the mattress.
A sealed envelope.
Across the front, written in Sophie's careful handwriting, were six words that made Carol's heart stop.
For Daniel... If I Don't Wake Up.
Her hands began to shake.
Slowly, she opened the envelope.
