Chapter 1 – The Letter She Never Wanted Him to Read
My Daniel,
If you're reading this, it means I couldn't keep my promise.
I wanted so badly to wake up beside you this morning.
I wanted to spend fifty years arguing over what movie to watch, growing old on our front porch, and embarrassing our grandchildren together.
But my body had other plans.
Carol's tears blurred the ink.
She continued reading.
Three months ago, the doctors told me my anemia wasn't improving.
They found complications that made even simple exhaustion dangerous.
They begged me to postpone the wedding.
I almost did.
Carol remembered.
The week before the ceremony, Sophie had quietly suggested waiting another year.
Everyone—including Carol—had assumed she was nervous.
Daniel had laughed, hugged her, and said love was worth any obstacle.
None of them knew the truth.
The letter continued.
I couldn't tell you.
Because I knew exactly what you would do.
You would cancel everything.
You would spend every dollar trying to save me.
You would watch me every minute instead of living your own life.
And I couldn't let the man I love become my full-time caretaker before we even became husband and wife.
Carol covered her mouth.
Every harsh word she'd spoken about Sophie that morning echoed in her mind like knives.
Lazy.
Spoiled.
Selfish.
The girl had been carrying a secret heavier than anyone in that house could imagine.
Suddenly Daniel rushed into the room.
"Mom!"
He stopped when he saw the blood-stained sheets.
Then he saw Sophie's motionless body.
Everything inside him shattered.
"Sophie..."
He dropped to his knees beside the bed.
The letter slipped from Carol's hands.
Daniel picked it up.
Halfway through reading it, he broke down completely.
"I would have chosen you," he whispered through sobs.
"I would've chosen every hospital... every treatment... every sleepless night."
He pressed his forehead against hers.
