The mansion had never been so quiet.
Richard Ashford stood frozen in the grand foyer, his expensive briefcase slipping from his hand onto the polished marble floor.
His daughter...
Emily...
Wearing a faded maid's uniform.
Barefoot.
A bucket of dirty water beside her.
For a long moment, he couldn't breathe.
Emily slowly looked up. Her eyes were red from crying, but she didn't run to him. She simply lowered her head, as though she had already accepted that no one would save her.
"What... is this?" Richard asked, his voice barely above a whisper.
Victoria, his elegant wife, forced a smile.
"Darling, it's not what it looks like."
Richard ignored her.
He walked toward Emily, noticing the bruises on her wrists.
The cleaning chemicals had left her hands raw.
His chest tightened.
"Who did this to you?"
Emily hesitated.
Victoria answered before she could.
"She's become impossible to manage. I only wanted to teach her responsibility."
Emily slowly shook her head.
"I've cleaned this house every day for eight months."
Silence.
Richard stared at his wife.
Victoria's confident smile cracked.
Emily continued.
"I wasn't allowed to eat with everyone."
"I slept in the storage room."
"I wasn't allowed to call you."
Richard's face turned pale.
"I thought... you were away at boarding school."
Emily looked directly into his eyes.
"That's what she told you."
Every word felt like another stone crushing his heart.
Richard turned toward Victoria.
"You lied to me."
She stepped backward.
"I did it for our family."
"No," Richard answered.
"You did it because you thought I would never find out."
