The dining room fell into a silence so complete that even the ticking grandfather clock sounded deafening.
Richard Hawthorne stood without assistance.
For months, everyone had believed the old man couldn't even lift himself from bed. Doctors had called his condition irreversible. His own family had spoken over him as though he were already dead.
Yet now he stood taller than anyone remembered.
His sharp blue eyes swept across the room before settling on me.
"Emma," he said calmly. "Come here."
My legs trembled as I crossed the room, one hand instinctively protecting my pregnant belly.
Richard noticed the swelling beneath my torn blouse.
His expression darkened.
"Who touched my grandson?"
No one answered.
Daniel—my husband—cleared his throat.
"Father... you don't understand."
"I understand enough."
Richard looked directly at his wife, Margaret.
"Did you strike her?"
Margaret folded her arms.
"She deserved discipline."
Before another word could leave her mouth—
SLAP!
The sound echoed through the mansion.
Richard had slapped his own wife.
For fifty years he had never once laid a hand on her.
Tonight was different.
"You dared assault the mother of my grandchild."
Margaret staggered backward in disbelief.
Daniel rushed forward.
"Dad!"
Richard turned toward him.
"And you..."
His voice became colder than winter.
"...stood there while your wife begged for mercy."
Daniel lowered his eyes.
"It wasn't my place."
Richard laughed bitterly.
"No."
"It was exactly your place."
Then he pressed a small black button hidden beneath the dining table.
Within seconds...
Three security guards entered.
Not house security.
Corporate security.
The men answered only to Richard.
"Lock every exit."
The guards obeyed immediately.
"No one leaves this house until I know every lie that has poisoned this family."
