Daniel’s phone buzzed in his pocket, shattering the dead silence of the room. He stared at me, his hand trembling as he pulled it out. The caller ID flashed brightly: Benson & Associates—Corporate Legal.
Slowly, he answered the call.
I watched the remaining color drain from his face as the senior partner explained exactly who held the strings to his marionette life.
