Chapter 1: The Truth Behind the Bruise

Chapter 1: The Truth Behind the Bruise

The silence inside the ballroom became unbearable.

Guests stared as Ethan Carter stood beside his mother, his hand still resting gently on Diane's trembling shoulder.

Victoria let out a nervous laugh.

"Ethan... don't be ridiculous. She's just being dramatic."

He didn't answer.

Instead, he carefully brushed a strand of gray hair away from Diane's bruised cheek.

The dark fingerprint-shaped mark was impossible to ignore.

His voice was calm.

"Who did this?"

Diane quickly lowered her head.

"It was an accident."

Victoria folded her arms.

"She tripped in the hallway."

Ethan slowly looked toward the wedding planner.

"You have security cameras in the east corridor, don't you?"

The planner froze.

"Yes... every hallway is recorded."

Victoria's face instantly turned pale.

"There is no need to embarrass everyone with security footage."

But Ethan had already pulled out his phone.

"Show it. Now."

Minutes later, the ballroom screens that had been prepared for the wedding slideshow displayed the security recording.

Every guest watched in stunned silence.

There was Diane carrying flower arrangements through the hallway.

Victoria approached her.

No collision.

No accident.

Victoria deliberately grabbed Diane's arm.

She shoved her against the marble wall.

The flowers scattered across the floor.

Then Victoria slapped her.

Hard.

Diane never fought back.

She simply apologized over and over while trying to collect the flowers.

Victoria leaned close enough for the microphone hidden in the hallway to capture every word.

"You should remember your place."

"You're nothing but a poor widow living off your son."

"If you ruin my wedding, I'll make sure you disappear from his life forever."

Gasps echoed throughout the ballroom.

Several guests instinctively stepped away from Victoria.

Ethan closed his eyes for one long second.

Every memory of the woman he loved shattered before him.

When he opened them again...

There was no forgiveness left.

He quietly removed the wedding ring from his pocket.

"I was about to promise you forever."

He placed the ring on the nearest table.

"But someone who humiliates my mother could never become my wife."

The ballroom erupted in whispers.

Victoria reached for him.

"Ethan, please... I was stressed!"

He stepped back.

"No."

"You revealed who you really are."

And for the first time in her life...

Victoria realized money could not buy back respect.
