“Cut it off!” Noah screamed, his voice breaking into panicked sobs. His small body convulsed against the hospital bed until the metal frame rattled beneath him. “Please, Dad... cut my arm off!”
“Cut it off!” Noah screamed, his voice breaking into panicked sobs. His small body convulsed against the hospital bed until the metal frame rattled beneath him. “Please, Dad... cut my arm off!”
The room fell into stunned silence.
Everyone froze.
Except Marissa.
Standing beside the IV stand in an immaculate white cashmere coat, she pressed trembling fingers to her lips, performing the role of the frightened stepmother perfectly. To the doctors and nurses, she looked horrified.
To Noah...
She looked satisfied.
Daniel Vale rushed to his son's bedside, dropping to one knee.
"Noah, look at me." His voice trembled with concern. "It's only a cast. You're safe."
Noah shook his head violently, tears streaming down his pale face.
"No... no, I'm not! There's something inside it!"
Daniel frowned.
"What do you mean?"
"It moves!" Noah cried. "It scratches me! She put something in there!"
For the briefest moment, Marissa's expression hardened.
Then the mask returned.
She laid a gentle hand on Daniel's shoulder.
"Daniel..." she whispered softly. "The medication is making him delirious. The doctor warned us this might happen."
"I'm not lying!" Noah screamed, his voice cracking with desperation. "Please believe me!"
Daniel closed his eyes for a second, grief and exhaustion weighing heavier than reason. Since losing Noah's mother two years earlier, he had become a man desperate to believe life had finally become normal again.
That was exactly what Marissa had counted on.
She had entered his life wrapped in kindness, married him barely a year after the funeral, smiled through every charity gala, kissed Noah's forehead whenever people were watching...
...and poisoned his childhood whenever they weren't.
"You're not really injured," she had whispered after Daniel fell asleep one night. "But you'll learn what happens when little boys refuse to obey me."
Three days earlier, Noah had supposedly fallen down the basement stairs while reaching for a toy.
Marissa had called the ambulance in tears.
She told everyone he was clumsy.
Sensitive.
Always exaggerating since his mother's death.
Every doctor believed her.
Daniel believed her.
Now he looked down at his trembling son, torn between fear and embarrassment.
Finally, his patience snapped.
"Enough."
The single word shattered what little hope Noah had left.
Then another voice broke the silence.
"Mr. Vale..."
Everyone turned.
Evelyn Hart stood quietly in the doorway, rainwater dripping from the black umbrella she had just closed. Twenty-eight years old, calm under pressure, she had worked for the family as Noah's babysitter for barely two weeks.
Marissa had disliked her from the very first day.
She watched too carefully.
Asked too many questions.
And never laughed when Marissa humiliated Noah.
"A child begging for his cast to be removed isn't normal," Evelyn said evenly.
Marissa's icy gaze shot toward her.
"You're employed to babysit," she said coldly. "Not interfere with medical decisions."
Evelyn didn't even look at her.
She kept her eyes on Noah, who was biting his lower lip so hard a thin line of blood appeared.
"Then let me protect the child I'm being paid to watch."
Daniel rubbed his temples.
"The orthopedic surgeon said the cast cannot come off for six weeks."

Evelyn nodded once.
"And that same surgeon confirmed there was no open fracture."
She took one slow step forward.
"Removing part of the cast long enough to inspect his arm won't endanger him."
Marissa's smile became razor thin.
"If you touch that cast without permission, I'll have you arrested."
For a long second...
No one moved.
Then Evelyn calmly unzipped her handbag.
She reached inside...
...and pulled out a compact medical cast cutter.
Daniel stared.
"Why would you carry one of those?"
Evelyn met his eyes without hesitation.
"Because before I became a nanny..."
She tightened her grip on the instrument.
"...I spent eight years as a pediatric trauma nurse."
For the first time since entering the room...
Marissa's smile disappeared.
Only for a heartbeat.
But it was long enough.
Evelyn saw it.

And in that fleeting crack behind the perfect mask...
She saw fear
