Chapter 1 – The Call That Changed Everything

Chapter 1 – The Call That Changed Everything

Patricia folded her arms as thunder rolled across the sky.

"You've embarrassed this family long enough," she said. "Take your things and leave."

Nathaniel tossed a bank envelope onto the wet driveway.

"There's fifty thousand dollars in there," he said. "Consider it compensation."

Evelyn looked down at the envelope, then back at the man she had once trusted with her whole heart.

"Compensation?" she asked softly.

"For four years."

"For our child."

"For every promise you broke."

Nathaniel's jaw tightened.

"You'll be fine."

"No," Evelyn answered calmly. "I'll survive."

She bent down, picked up her grandmother's muddy ring, and slipped it into her pocket instead of onto her finger.

Then she reached into her purse, pulled out her phone, and dialed a number she had never wanted to use.

The call connected after only one ring.

"Dad..."

Her voice trembled for the first time that night.

"...come get me."

A brief silence followed.

Then she added quietly,

"And bring the legal team."

Across the country, Richard Brooks, founder and chairman of Brooks International Holdings, stood from the conference table so abruptly that every executive in the room froze.

"What happened?" he asked.

"They threw me out."

Another pause.

"And Nathaniel doesn't know who I really am."

Richard closed his eyes.

"I told you years ago that hiding your identity would only protect other people."

"I know."

"Stay where you are."

His voice became frighteningly calm.

"I'm coming."

Forty minutes later...

The roar of engines echoed through the estate.

Five black SUVs rolled through the front gate.

Followed by a luxury sedan bearing the Brooks family crest.

Nathaniel frowned.

"What the hell is this?"

Patricia suddenly went pale.

She recognized that crest.

Years ago...

She had seen it only once...

At a charity gala attended by the wealthiest families in the country.

Her lips parted.

"No..."

"It can't be..."

The sedan door opened.

An older man stepped out wearing a simple charcoal overcoat.

Despite the rain, every security guard immediately straightened.

Every attorney exited behind him carrying leather briefcases.

Richard Brooks walked directly to Evelyn.

Without saying a word...

He removed his own coat and wrapped it around his daughter.

Only then did he look toward Nathaniel.

"So..."

May you like

Richard said quietly.

"You're the man who threw my daughter into the rain."
