Chapter 2 – The Truth Behind the Marriage

Chapter 2 – The Truth Behind the Marriage
Nobody spoke.
The rain seemed to disappear beneath the crushing silence.
Nathaniel forced an awkward laugh.
"There must be some misunderstanding."
Richard ignored him.
Instead, he gently touched Evelyn's face.
"Did anyone hurt you?"
She nodded toward her suitcase.
"They didn't hit me."
"They just made sure I had nowhere to belong."
Richard's expression hardened.
Behind him, the lead attorney stepped forward.
"Mr. Gray."
He handed Nathaniel a thick folder.
"You've been served."
Nathaniel blinked.
"What is this?"
"The divorce petition."
"The shareholder injunction."
"And evidence regarding the misuse of confidential company assets."
Nathaniel frowned.
"What company assets?"
The attorney opened another file.
"You believed Gray Innovations belonged solely to you."
"It doesn't."
Nathaniel laughed again.
"I founded that company."
The lawyer calmly slid incorporation documents across the hood of one SUV.
"Actually..."
"Sixty-one percent of the founding capital came from Brooks Family Ventures."
Nathaniel's smile disappeared.
Patricia grabbed the papers.
"No..."
"This isn't possible."
Richard finally spoke.
"When my daughter insisted on building a life without using our family name..."
"I respected her decision."
"So every investment came through anonymous trusts."
Nathaniel stared at Evelyn.
"You knew?"
She nodded.
"I never cared about the money."
May you like
"I only cared about you."
"And that was my greatest mistake."
