Chapter 1 – The Recording Behind the Door

Chapter 1 – The Recording Behind the Door

Mariana barely breathed until Camila's footsteps faded down the marble hallway.

Only then did she kneel beside the locked bedroom door.

"Doña Consuelo?"

"I'm here," the elderly woman answered weakly from inside.

Mariana looked around before pulling a thin metal hairpin from her bun. Years ago, her father had taught her how to open simple locks while repairing old furniture. After several trembling attempts, the lock clicked.

The door swung open.

Doña Consuelo sat exactly where Mariana had left her, tears running silently down her pale cheeks.

"I thought she'd leave me here until tomorrow," she whispered.

Mariana helped her drink fresh water.

"Why doesn't Don Santiago know?"

The old woman gave a sad smile.

"Because Camila makes sure he never sees me awake."

She pointed toward a bedside drawer.

Inside were dozens of unopened letters.

Birthday cards.

Christmas greetings.

Photos from cousins.

Every envelope had already been opened before being hidden away.

"My family never stopped writing," Doña Consuelo murmured. "She simply made sure I never knew."

Mariana felt anger rise inside her.

This wasn't loneliness.

It was imprisonment.

That evening, while polishing the dining room table, Mariana overheard Camila speaking on the phone in the library.

The door wasn't completely closed.

"...The residence confirmed they have one room left."

Pause.

"No, Santiago still believes it's the doctor's recommendation."

Another pause.

"If that old woman doesn't eat, even better... she'll stop being a burden sooner."

Mariana's heart stopped.

Without thinking, she quietly reached into the pocket of her apron.

Her old cellphone.

She pressed Record.

Every poisonous word.

Every calculated sentence.

Captured.

When Camila ended the call, Mariana slipped away before she was seen.

Back in her tiny staff room, she listened to the recording again.

The voice was unmistakable.

Elegant.

Calm.

Cruel.

For the first time, Mariana possessed something stronger than suspicion.

She had proof.

The next morning, Santiago prepared to leave for another business trip.

Camila kissed him goodbye at the front entrance.

"I'll take wonderful care of your mother."

He smiled gratefully.

"I don't know what I'd do without you."

Mariana wanted to scream.

Instead, she noticed something else.

Doña Consuelo stood behind the upstairs curtain.

Watching her own son drive away.

Too weak to wave.

Too forgotten to matter.

Mariana closed her fist around the phone inside her apron.

May you like

Soon, she promised herself.

Soon he'll hear everything.
