Chapter 2 – The Woman Who Refused to Stay Silent
The opportunity arrived sooner than Mariana expected.
Three nights later, Santiago returned unexpectedly after a canceled international meeting.
The mansion was unusually quiet.
Too quiet.
He walked into his mother's room.
Empty.
The bed had been perfectly made.
Camila smiled from the doorway.
"The doctor suggested moving her downstairs. Less walking."
Santiago nodded automatically.
Before he could leave, Mariana stepped into the hallway.
"Sir..."
Camila's eyes narrowed instantly.
"What are you doing? Go finish the kitchen."
But Mariana didn't move.
"I think there are things about your mother you deserve to know."
The room fell silent.
Camila laughed softly.
"Our housekeeper has become dramatic."
Santiago looked uncomfortable.
"Mariana, if this isn't important—"
"It is."
She took out her phone.
Camila's confidence disappeared for the first time.
"What is that?"
Mariana pressed Play.
"...If that old woman doesn't eat, even better... she'll stop being a burden sooner."
The recording echoed through the room.
No one spoke.
Then another sentence.
"I'll have Santiago sign the residence papers before he realizes she isn't sick enough."
Silence.
Heavy.
Impossible.
Santiago slowly turned toward his wife.
"Tell me that isn't your voice."
Camila swallowed.
"It's edited."
Another recording followed.
Another conversation.
Another lie.
One after another.
Until excuses became impossible.
Santiago rushed downstairs.
He found his mother locked inside a converted storage room.
No television.
No telephone.
No family photographs.
Only a single narrow bed.
Doña Consuelo looked up.
For several seconds she simply stared.
Then she whispered the same word she had been trying to say for months.
"Santi..."
His knees gave way.
"I'm so sorry, Mama."
He held her as both of them cried.
From the hallway, Camila quietly picked up her handbag.
She intended to disappear before the police arrived.

She almost made it to the front gate.
Almost.
