Chapter 7 - The Flower Girl's Secret.

Mia woke before sunrise.

Lily had slept less than an hour in the chair beside the bed, afraid that if she closed her eyes too long she would lose three more years.

When Mia opened them, she stared at Lily for several seconds.

Then she reached across the blanket and touched her mother’s sleeve.

“You’re still here.”

Lily swallowed.

“I’m still here.”

Mia sat up.

“Are you going away again?”

“No.”

The promise came instantly, even though Lily knew the next days could become dangerous and chaotic.

Mia studied her face.

“Dad said you left because you didn’t want us.”

Lily felt the words like a pressure behind her ribs.

“He lied.”

“Why?”

“Because the truth would have made him answer questions he did not want to answer.”

Mia looked down at her hands.

“Did you try to find me?”

“Every day.”

“Then why didn’t you come to school?”

“I did once.”

Mia looked up.

Lily told her about a spring afternoon eighteen months earlier.

She had stood across the street from Mia’s elementary school after learning the dismissal time from an old parent newsletter.

Private security appeared before the children came outside.

They showed police a restraining order carrying Lily’s name and a death certificate claiming the real Lily Vale no longer existed.

She was detained for six hours while officers tried to determine whether she was an identity thief.

Grant arrived at the station with his attorney.

He never entered the room.

He simply confirmed through a representative that the woman claiming to be Lily was a disturbed stranger.

Mia’s eyes filled with tears.

“He knew it was you.”

“Yes.”

“Did he see you?”

“Yes.”

“What did he do?”

“He walked away.”

Mia pressed her lips together.

Lily did not add anything else.

A child did not need every adult cruelty at once.

They ate breakfast together from room-service trays while police moved quietly through the hotel.

Ethan joined them at seven.

He had changed into a clean black shirt but still wore the gray jacket.

Mia looked relieved when she saw him.

“You didn’t get arrested.”

“Not today.”

Lily gave him a look.

Ethan corrected himself.

“I mean no.”

Mia almost smiled.

Then she remembered something.

“The man in the flower room wasn’t the only one looking for the folder.”

Ethan sat down.

“Who else?”

“Celeste.”

Lily blinked.

“The bride?”

Mia nodded.

Before the ceremony, Mia had gone upstairs because she did not want to practice the family photographs again.

She heard voices behind the bridal suite door.

Grant and Celeste were arguing.

Celeste demanded to know why Grant needed Mia to sign documents during the reception.

Grant told her it was a routine trust update.

Celeste said a child should have her own lawyer.

Grant answered with a sentence Mia remembered exactly.

“After midnight, none of this will matter.”

Lily looked at Ethan.

“That explains the deadline.”

Mia continued.

Celeste then asked Grant about a woman named Lily.

The question shocked Lily.

“What did he say?”

“He said you were dead.”

“Why did Celeste ask?”

“She said she found a picture in his desk.”

Ethan leaned forward.

“What picture?”

“A picture of you outside my school.”

Lily went cold.

The threatening photograph delivered to the suite showed Mia leaving school.

There had also been surveillance of Lily.

Grant had known she was alive long before the wedding.

“Did Celeste say when she found it?” Lily asked.

“Last week.”

Mia slid off the bed and went to the small table where her pale blue dress had been placed inside a garment bag.

She reached into one of the hidden pockets sewn into the skirt.

“I took something.”

Lily’s heart sank.

“Mia, what?”

The girl pulled out a tiny silver voice recorder no larger than a pack of gum.

Ethan stared.

“Where did you get that?”

“It was under Dad’s desk.”

Lily recognized the device.

Grant used recorders during board meetings because he distrusted handwritten minutes.

Mia said she found it two weeks earlier while searching for a missing bracelet in his home office.

She pressed a button by accident and heard Grant’s voice.

He was speaking with Nolan Price.

Mia did not understand most of the conversation, but she heard her own name and her mother’s name.

So she kept it.

“Why didn’t you tell anyone?” Lily asked.

Mia looked embarrassed.

“Because Dad gets mad when people touch his things.”

Ethan held out his hand.

“May I?”

Mia gave him the recorder.

Detective Shah arrived minutes later and copied the files without altering the device.

There were thirty-seven recordings.

Most were mundane business notes.

The final six were not.

On one, Grant and Nolan discussed moving assets before the remarriage.

On another, they argued about Frank Delaney’s payments.

Then came a file dated eight days earlier.

Grant’s voice was unmistakable.

“If Lily appears before the ceremony, Dane handles her.”

Nolan answered.

“And if she appears after?”

“Then the transfer is done.”

“What about Mia?”

Grant sighed.

“She signs the waiver, and we move on.”

Detective Shah stopped playback.

Lily’s face had become unreadable.

Mia sat close beside her.

“I didn’t know what waiver meant.”

Lily took her hand.

“You were never supposed to know.”

Shah resumed the recording.

Nolan’s voice sounded nervous.

“You are treating your daughter like a line item.”

Grant answered instantly.

“I am protecting what is mine.”

There was a pause.

Then Nolan said something none of them expected.

“She is not the only heir.”

The room went silent.

Grant’s voice lowered.

“Do not say that again.”

The recording ended.

Mia looked at Lily.

“What does heir mean?”

May you like

Lily could not answer because she was asking herself the same question in a different form.

If Mia was not the only heir, then Grant had hidden another person from everyone.
