Chapter 8 - The Locked Bridal Suite.

Celeste Rowan disappeared from the hotel before police could interview her again.

Her mother claimed she had gone to a private home to rest.

Her attorney refused to provide the address.

By nine in the morning, the missing bride had become more urgent than the canceled wedding itself.

Lily did not believe Celeste had fled out of embarrassment.

The argument Mia overheard suggested Celeste had questions of her own.

Ethan agreed.

“She found your photograph in Grant’s desk.”

“She knew something was wrong.”

“And she asked about Mia’s documents.”

“She may have more.”

Detective Shah obtained a warrant for the bridal suite based on the forged waiver and the witness statement from Mia.

Grant’s attorneys objected before officers even reached the room.

The suite looked as though someone had left in a hurry.

An open makeup case sat on the dressing table.

One shoe lay near the bed while its match was missing.

A half-zipped travel bag contained two dresses, a passport case, and an empty envelope.

Lily noticed a glass of water beside the bed.

It was untouched.

Ethan looked at the balcony door.

Locked from inside.

The suite had only one hallway entrance.

The hotel’s electronic record showed Celeste entered at 5:18 p.m., shortly before the ballroom confrontation.

She left at 5:29.

She returned at 5:47.

Then her key was never used again.

Yet staff saw her downstairs after six.

“Someone else let her out,” Ethan said.

The connecting door to the adjacent suite had been opened at 5:51.

That room belonged to Nolan Price.

Detective Shah immediately requested access.

Nolan’s suite had been emptied.

No luggage.

No toiletries.

No personal items.

Only one paper remained in the trash.

It was a room-service receipt with three handwritten numbers on the back.

Lily recognized the first number as a project code used by Vale Urban Development.

The second was a bank routing prefix.

The third looked like a date.

“November fourteenth,” she said.

Ethan looked at her.

“What happened November fourteenth?”

Lily searched her memory.

“That was the day our original family trust was amended after Mia was born.”

The trust had been created by Grant’s father, Henry Vale.

It divided certain legacy assets between Grant, any children of his marriage, and a charitable foundation.

After Mia’s birth, Henry amended the document to protect her share from corporate creditors.

Henry died six months later.

Grant became trustee.

Lily had always believed Mia was the only child named in the amendment.

Now Nolan’s words on the recorder suggested otherwise.

She called her former estate attorney, Rachel Kim.

Rachel had spent the past year helping Lily reconstruct records quietly.

When Lily mentioned November fourteenth, Rachel went silent.

“There was a sealed schedule attached to the trust.”

“What schedule?”

“I never saw it.”

“You were my attorney.”

“I represented you on the corporate documents.”

Rachel sounded frustrated with herself.

“Henry used a separate estate firm for the sealed schedule.”

“Which firm?”

“Dane, Price and Holloway.”

Lily stared at Ethan.

Marcus Dane again.

Nolan Price’s family firm had helped draft the trust before Nolan joined Grant’s company.

The names were everywhere.

Rachel continued.

“Henry told me the schedule would become relevant only if a specific condition occurred.”

“What condition?”

“I don’t know.”

A hotel officer interrupted.

They had found something in the bridal suite bathroom.

Behind a decorative panel under the sink was a small white envelope taped to the wall.

Celeste’s name was written on the front.

Inside was a handwritten note.

If anything happens tonight, give this to Lily Vale.

The note was signed Celeste.

Lily opened the folded pages carefully.

Celeste wrote that she began suspecting Grant after he refused to discuss Lily’s death in detail.

Three weeks before the wedding, she found a photograph showing Lily outside Mia’s school.

Grant claimed a woman was impersonating Lily to extort money.

Celeste did not believe him.

She searched his office while he was traveling.

She found copies of the trust documents and a list of payments to a private medical facility.

She also found letters from a woman named Anna Pierce.

The letters were addressed to Henry Vale.

Celeste copied them and hid the copies somewhere Grant would not search.

The note ended with a sentence that made Lily stop breathing for a moment.

Ask Grant what happened to Anna’s son.

Ethan read it twice.

“Who is Anna Pierce?”

Lily shook her head.

“I don’t know.”

Detective Shah asked for the name of Dr. Malcolm Pierce, the physician whose signature had been forged.

Lily’s eyes widened.

“Pierce.”

The same surname.

They called the doctor.

He answered from his home outside Evanston.

At first, he said Anna Pierce was his late younger sister.

Then Lily asked whether Anna had a son.

Dr. Pierce became quiet.

“Yes.”

“What was his name?”

“Julian.”

“Who was his father?”

The doctor hesitated so long that Lily already knew the answer would matter.

“Henry Vale.”

Lily sat down.

Henry Vale had another son.

Grant had a half-brother.

Mia was not the only heir because Grant was not the only heir.

Ethan looked toward the empty connecting suite.

Nolan had known.

Marcus Dane had known.

Celeste had discovered it.

And if the sealed trust schedule recognized Julian Pierce, then Grant’s control of the entire Vale estate had been built on a second buried identity.

Detective Shah’s phone rang.

She answered, listened, and looked at Lily.

“We found Celeste.”

“Is she safe?”

Shah hesitated.

“She is at Northwestern Memorial.”

Lily stood.

May you like

“What happened?”

“She says someone tried to force her into a car behind the hotel.”
